Re: didn't he knock up some woman in the old universe?

Actually in the S4 ep of Enterprise there was an experiment with binary cloning to produce a 50/50 Vulcan-Human child. The scientists did it wrong and there were fatal problems with the child's health, but upon investigating what went wrong, they found that the problem was with the scientists' methods, not with Human DNA-Vulcan DNA compatibility. They ended it with saying that there should be no complications with Humans and Vulcans producing children together. What they meant by that is left a bit vague, but they don't say it can't happen without genetic engineering or that it would require medical assistance. Just clarifying... The entire two-part episode is actually uploaded to youtube.
medie: Spock - well that's not canon (trek - tos - not canon)

I remember the episode, but the impression I was left with was that genetic intervention was a likely requirement. Which given the differences in organ placement and basic blood chemistry is not all that implausible. Particularly with Elizabeth as a lesson, I don't see anyone taking any chances the second time around.

Idk... You might want to watch the ENT ep again and see what you think after reviewing because I watched the whole two-parter just last week to get clarification on this very issue (the scene I'm thinking of in particular can be watched here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qeakf_mKsQ), starts at about 6:30). They seemed to me to really leave it open to interpretation as to whether or not medical assistance would be required, but at this point in canon, they really just didn't know for sure because no one had ever tried before. They seemed to suggest to me that Elizabeth was an unique case because the methods that the geneticists used in creating her were incorrect, but not because Vulcan and Human DNA are generally difficult to combine. Also, it is canon - from TNG - that Humans and Romulans can reproduce relatively easily without medical help (an alternate universe Tasha Yar was raped - probably many times - by a Romulan general, who took her prisoner and made her his concubine, she got pregnant and had a daughter), so there's reason to think that it could be possible for Vulcans and Humans to make babies through sexual reproduction too...

And I just read "Sarek" by A.C. Crispin (and loved it!), and in that book, Sarek related that Spock was conceived during his first pon farr cycle after Sarek and Amanda were married. I took that as being a natural conception from the way the circumstances were described. But, of course, novels aren't actually canon.

I love that there are so many ways things can be done in science fiction. Leaves a lot of room to play with things and speculate where canon is vague...
