[Katawa Shoujo]

(Anonymous) 2010-03-26 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I was talking about that game with a guy in my class the other day, and he said "it just comes down to porn." Is the entire point really just to have sex with them?

Still anon, I'm glad it helped boost your confidence!

[identity profile] sandvich.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a dating sim, so at some point it does come down to porn, but the folks a Four-Leaf have put a lot more care into developing their characters, treating the disability aspect with respect, and generally making a sensitive, well-thought-out product than any other dating sim I've played.

[identity profile] sandvich.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret made me smile. You're beautiful, anon. Never forget it. ♥

[identity profile] scarlet-carsons.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always been wary of Katawa Shoujo, but this made me d'awww so hard.

[identity profile] cowgirlmaxwell.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Even though it is a porn game, I'm so glad that you found something to boost your confidence about your arm <3

[identity profile] sky-queen3.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What does it mean in English? :S

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it means "cripple girl."

[identity profile] sky-queen3.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, ok. Interesting name.

[identity profile] therubozu.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really sure- literally I think it means "Disability Girls", but there are apparently (this is just what I've read; I don't read/speak Japanese) connotations to the words that would make it mean something closer to "Retarded Girls" to a Japanese speaker... It obviously doesn't have those connotations to the English audience, but it's still there.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-26 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
...My own disability is a little easier to hide in public than yours, OP, but I can really relate to this secret- I've felt the same way plenty of times.

I'd kind of been debating off and on for a while whether or not to give this game a try. I've heard plenty of good things about it, but always by non-disabled people.. and I admit, the name was kind of off-putting once I found out what it translated to.

But hearing you talk about how you enjoyed it and how much it meant to you.. I think I'm going to have to play it, sometime.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Try it out. I expected it to be pretty insensitive, but they don't make jokes at the expense of any disabled people. The main character fumbles a bit, like many able-bodied people might (although he has a heart condition, he is put in a school for the disabled due to his special needs), but he's sensitive enough to be careful with what he says. I found all of the characters really endearing.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2010-03-26 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
So the fact that it translates to "Cripple Girl" and the fact that many of the characters have no special educational needs to address like blindness yet are still sent to "cripple school" rather than mainstreamed don't bother you? I mean, find inspiration and confidence where you can, but it IS a novelty/fetish game, and there are much better sources of positive representations of people with disabilities, i.e. New Mobility magazine, Murderball, etc.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think the purpose of the school was for rehabilitation and to allow for very close access to specialized medical centres, as well as to address special needs, but I haven't played it in a while.

[identity profile] clarice.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it doesn't interest me enough to play it and find out for certain, but most of the character profiles don't indicate ongoing medical issues (i.e. there's no reason a double amputee who runs track wouldn't be in regular school). I'm not up in arms about it because it's just a silly dating game/porn sim, but it seems like a dubious source of inspiration for finding one's own disability attractive, especially given that the title uses an offensive word for people with disabilities (though having not played it I won't dispute that the game treats the characters respectfully; I've heard that said, so it's really the premise and title that I find a little questionable.)

The reason that a lot of them go to the school is because they have special health needs. There's a lot of doctors and such on campus in case those with delicate health, such as the main character, has an episode.

It's not supposed to be a 100% accurate portrayal of special needs people anyways.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I would call Murderball realistic rather than positive (some of those guys are real dicks), but assuming you're talking about the movie, I would imagine the OP would have trouble finding a female role model in it - it is kind of a sausage-fest. (Still love it, though. That Zupan's other IMDB credit is for "Wheelchair Zombie Badass" tickles me no end.)

:\ You should play it before judging. I played it, at least for a little while, and it wasn't offensive in the least.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
You'd never expect a dating sim born on /a/ filled with disabled characters NOT to be one-dimensional fetish fuel.

But I completely agree with you. It's a fun game with a great fandom and I love the threads I've seen on it. And I'm glad to see it making a difference for you.

[identity profile] mabis.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
It actually started out being tasteless fetish fuel. It's been forever so I might be remembering wrong, but the main idea comes from a manga about the lives of otaku, some of them creepy, and one of the bits was them making a porn game about disabled girls. /a/ just took the idea and ran with it.

[identity profile] pimmy.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
This put a smile on my face. (and you used my picture~)
The fandom makes a few out of taste jokes on occasion, but you're definitely right, I love how they're treated first and foremost as -characters-.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2010-03-27 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I was fascinated by that game because the characters were different from the usual ren-ai games. I know it's a hentai game but I never got that far.

I love how they focus on the characters. I related to it as well because I was born prematurely and I have scars over my body due to multiple surgeries and I also have to give myself shots every two week of b-12 for the rest of my life.

It's a bit silly but that game made me feel better about my body. Prior to that I was disassociated from it.

So, you're not alone and you are awesome. =) Your secret made me smile.
