There's promotional material and in game quotes and such that help establish some sort of vague hints of a canon "personality" for each character, and all of their play mechanics establish a number of attributes as to what the characters do...And the way that the characters play mechanics interact in game can help to establish "relationship" models for them by interpreting them metaphorically. I'm not going to deny that canon is shallow, but they're not TOTALLY DEVOID OF CHARACTER. Fanon is a pretty powerful driving force here. It's no weirder than Vocaloids or OS-tans having a fandom.

I love Castle. I just don't feel the need to make secrets about it.

I'm still perplexed at the level of Castle hate because at the end of the day it's a mid-rated show with a small fandom. I don't get what there is to hate so much about it. I mean, I despise BSG with the fire of a thousand suns, mostly because people talk about it being so deep when it's totally facile, but I still don't feel the need to make a billion secrets about it.

And before anyone says it: the Castle-hate secrets both far outweigh and predate last week's Castle-love secrets.

But... they are characters. Haven't you ever watched the "Meet The..." series? They all have expansion upon more than the character model, like Sniper still keeps in close contact with his parents and is satisfied with his job, Heavy is very meticulous about his weapons, Engineer enjoys drinking beer and playing guitar, so on and so forth. No, there isn't any real "plot" but that's kind of what fanfiction is: taking the general idea and veering off from it with your own, dressing up a character in the role you want them to play.

Tl;dr: There is some material, just not nearly as much as a "traditional" fandom.
