I LOVE following fanfic authors into published works. I've found three so far who went pro, and only one disappointed me. I didn't care much for her fic anyway.

If fic is fun for you, then keep at it! And maybe even consider telling your readers so they can find your original works. :3

Which three? And who disappointed you? *is also fascinated by it*

[identity profile] slr2moons.livejournal.com 2010-05-03 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
First was the disappointment: Cassandra Claire (fandom)/Cassandra Clare (pro). I couldn't finish her Draco fanfic trilogy, and I really do LOVE Draco. The only reason I made it through her original Mortal Intrsuments trilogy was for a minor character. I wanted to see what happened to him. I couldn't care less about the two leads, and the constant metaphors in her writing irritated me to no end. :P

Second was Mistful / Sarah Rees Brennan. I loved all of her fanfiction, particularly her Harry/Draco stories. I follow her on LJ and pounced on her first original novel The Demon's Lexicon the day it came out last year. I loved it, and have read it twice. Volume 2 will be out on the 18th OMG! *squees*

Third was Marnie / Alex Beecroft. She wrote a spectacular PotC slash fic that is one of my all-time favorites, and her profile back then stated she had published an original novel, which was also slash in the age of sail. False Colors. I tracked it down within a couple of days and thoroughly enjoyed it. She has 6 books out now! I do believe I am running behind.

Those are the three authors! One (personal) miss, two hits. ^^ Though TBH I read Cassandra Clare because I kept hearing wank about her and was curious. The other two, Sarah Rees Brennan and Alex Beecroft, were genuinely due to my love of their fanfic. :D

I still read Sarah's fic and cannot wait for Covenant to come out. I have it pre-ordered and I keep prodding my screen when I'm on Amazon to try and get it to come arrive faster! ;D

I've read it a few times as well (and have gone back and skimmed some passages :D). I requested some Gerald/Jamie for Yuletide this year but it, sadly, didn't happen. :(

I too can't wait for Covenant to come out!

Gerald/Jamie is a rather awesome ship, and while there is some floating around we always need more fic in the fandom. Probably when Covenant comes out there will be a little surge :)

[identity profile] slr2moons.livejournal.com 2010-05-03 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I certainly still love her fic! I need to pre-order Covenant. Thanks for the reminder. I'd lost track of the release date and didn't realize it was so soon. *is a bad fan*

Sorry to hear your Yuletide request didn't find a taker. :/ I ship Nick/Jamie, myself. I haven't gone looking for fic yet, though. I haven't explored much of the fandom, so I'm not even sure how popular my fave ship is. Maybe I'm not so much a bad fan as a very busy one. :B

Cool :)

I seem to have heard more bad things about Cassie Claire/Clare than good things, so I've steered clear of her work really. I think I may have read the blurb of a Mortal Instruments book at one time, but no more.

I love The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan though! Er, rather a lot in fact. Perhaps embarrassing amounts, considering hardly anyone has heard of it. And I am super excited about the sequel :D As well as liking her original work, I think Sarah seems like such a nice person, so I am glad she is not the one that disappointed you.

I don't think I've ever come across Marnie / Alex Beecroft - the extent of my involvement in PotC fandom was reading a couple of Jack/Norrington fics, I believe - but perhaps I shall check her out when I have a spare moment :)

You aren't missing much by passing on CC's original stuff. It really is thinly disguised HP fanfic with some Star Wars and pop culture references thrown in. :P I was not impressed at all.

I was lucky enough to meet Sarah and have her sign my copies of Lexicon and The Eternal Kiss! Eeeek! X3 She is indeed very sweet and talks the way she writes. I had my photo taken with her, too. :D

The fic by Marnie that made me a fan actually is Jack/Norrington! Here 'tis: Negotiations (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2352114/1/). It is awesome, and my one regret is it's "only" 20,000 words long. If ever I wanted a shortish fic to become an epic, it's this one. Hope you like it as much as I do!
