It also DOES NOT MEAN it's not, which is the big fucking problem in fandom at large.

Yeah, but a fic doesn't assume that the canon character is either way. Slashfic says "hey, let's assume this character is gay without knowing if it's true. Okay, now proceed".

If a character's sexual orientation is not explicitly stated, it means their sexual orientation is undefined. They could be straight, gay, bi, pan, ace, auto or attracted only to fuzzy purple elephants.

Yes, if said media is mostly heteronormative, its likely the character is straight. But, despite what people like to think, sexuality doesn't necessarily fit nicely into little boxes. Fandom is allowed to have their fun. Yes, shipping slash for the sake of shipping slash is pointless. That doesn't mean slash is less valid than het, or whatever else you'd like to ship.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I never said anything had to fit in perfect little boxes and slash is pairings so what you just said at the end there made no sense. What I did say, was that just because it isn't stated doesn't mean they can't be heterosexual, which seems to be a huge fucking taboo in fandom.

[identity profile] nighean-ruadh.livejournal.com 2010-05-03 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, they could be heterosexual. Yes, het pairings are oft maligned and outnumbered simply because the majority of fandom has a preference for slash. Yes, that is unfortunate and something of a problem that there are sections of fandom that won't acknowledge any pairing unless it has two hot men sexing each other up.

But what you're doing isn't any better, or at least your method of saying it could be vastly improved. An undefined character is just that; it is equally valid to assume they are not heterosexual as it is to assume that they are. That validity isn't affected by how prevalent it is in fandom.

And if you look at the range of possible sexualities the character could be, complete heterosexuality is one small possibility on a whole spectrum. There's a logic that follows that complete heterosexuality should be outnumbered. True, much of media is heteronormative, upping the odds of that outcome significantly, but it doesn't make it definitive while the character is still undefined.

Which is kind of the problem with the secret itself. It's assuming slash is a fetish and therefore isn't as valid as het. Slash itself is no more exploitative than any other form of shipping.
