Aw, same here Anon! Why do "petite" girls get all the love?

I don't really get why these two women are viewed as being "alternative beauties". Neither of them are outside the societal norm of "beautiful"; Dita is just as skinny as any Hollywood starlet. Just because they dye their hair black, put on red lipstick, and dress like 50s pinups with a goth twist doesn't mean they're shattering beauty norms.

I don't mean to deny your (or the OP's) satisfaction, but I really don't understand it... *maybe* I can see Bettie Page, *maybe*, but I don't think society has ever treated 36-24-36s like they're unattractive. Even if small breasts are in right now.

The thing is, Dita really is outside society's norms, at least to me. I'm pale, I love 50s fashion, I have darker hair, I love stockings and tights, and I love to wear the pin-up inspired makeup, so I's really refreshing to see someone who looks like Dita be successful and well-known. I mean, you Google Image 'Hollywood beauty' or any variation on it, most people you see are blonde, straight haired, tanned, and dressed in very modern clothing.

50 years ago, Dita might have been considered a beauty 'norm'- now, she's not, and I admire her enormously for that, and for giving me the confidence to do as I like and fuck what everyone else thinks.

Also, I don't really understand how being skinny automatically makes you 'fit into' society's standards of beauty? Just because you're skinny doesn't mean everyone automatically thinks you're beautiful/normal/what-have-you.

Also-

You tell me which one's outside of the society's current beauty and fashion norms.

Their *fashion* is different, but if Dita put on that dress Megan Fox was wearing? She'd look pretty similar. Minus a tan, but I view that as being a fashion choice, too. And even with the fashion choices-- in which Dita really just conforms to a *different* flavor of the beauty standard, with the same amount of grooming, attention to aesthetics, and cultured femininity-- Dita still has the bone structure, facial features, and, yes, body of any other celebrity. I don't feel like the fact that she styles herself differently is shattering any beauty norms.

I'm glad they've helped you towards self-acceptance and feeling sexy, though. That's definitely positive, no matter how confusing I find it.

No, they're not Cameron Diaz, but they still conform to a pretty "normal" standard of beauty, imho.

By the way, Betty Page died in December of 2008 at the age of 85; she didn't "dress like" a '50s pinup, she was the ultimate and archytypal 1950s pinup.

I'm well aware of that. My phrasing might not have been the best, but they both dress in similar styles and I was describing them BOTH as "like a '50s pinup". Page because she was one, Dita because she dresses like one.

Bettie Page and Dita von Teese have both taken control of their sexuality- if anything, they own men with it.

And, uh, they're not only sexually appealing to men. Most of their fans are women, for the exact reasons that the OP stated.

It's not even that they're sexually appealing- they definitely are, there's no doubt. But it's more- they're not just cardboard figures, they have personality, and they have a lot of it. Bettie especially. When I look at a picture of Bettie Page, my eyes don't just leap down to her breasts or vagina- they're on her face. She looks so free, so utterly ecstatic- I can't look at a picture of Bettie without smiling. She's powerful. Same with Dita, in a different way- with Dita, her look is more of a coy thing, a special, knowing kind of thing. She makes me smile, too, with that knowing.

Sorry if you somehow have managed to miss all of that, and can only see boobs and vag when you view their pictures.

Speaking for all feminists is just as bad as a man claiming he knows what is best for all women. I thought having the ability to make your OWN choice as a woman was what it was all about? You clearly haven't learned anything about the lives of either Bettie or Dita. Sex is not the enemy, people. Bettie was even pretty straight-laced.

Liking makeup/fashion and being a sex symbol does not equal poor, oppressed by the man and taking the rest of womankind with her villain.

Being a sex symbol makes her an object. It might be the only choice she thinks she can make, but it hardly makes a woman a good role model

I think you resulting to stereotypes and forgetting that a woman can be a sex symbol AND seen as a whole person. Also, I don't remember anyone calling them role models (not saying they aren't) but saying they helped other women become more comfortable with their looks and sexuality.

More to the point, my wife is the most brilliant woman I have ever met she has an English degree that she worked her ass of for, not just with school but working three jobs to support herself. She is also dead sexy and adorable she like being sexy and is proud of her self and her appearance. She loves pin up girls and still managed to do all of that, funny yes?
