This is such an odd secret. You say that and yet post some great art?

I will say this: much Kirk/McCoy doesn't really fulfill what some call the slash aesthetic. A lot of the writers of the pairing don't write those other big slash ships—you know, the usual con.txt kind of ships. So the way the stories go is quite different, unlike Kirk/Spock which of course is one of those slash aesthetic ships. You might just not like what Kirk/McCoy is doing, and that's okay.

Learning to separate preferences from quality is an important skill, though, before you run around maligning entire ships.

I am not one to explain it—I'm more of I-know-it-when-I-see-it—but if you poke around metafandom there is probably a good detailed analysis of it. Or you could try googling it, as I know there have been essays about it.

STOP MAKING SENSE. You're making it difficult for the OP to rest easy in the knowledge that she can cross K/B off her life list (after having announced to the world that it sucks).

As someone who writes K/B (and was recc'd above--thanks, anon!) I can confirm that its atypical nature is part of its appeal. Kirk and McCoy are flawed; are pretty evenly matched, physically and otherwise; and carry a lot of baggage. They're a great ship for people like me who are optimistic but not necessarily starry eyed about relationships.

Although the fandom is pretty shipoflexible, I notice older writers gravitate to K/B or Pike/One and younger writers to Sulu/Chekov or Gaila pairings. For people who enjoy more classic romantic narratives there's Spock/Uhura and K/S. So, something for everyone!

I totally agree with you about its appeal—I write it as well! It's not that angsty one true love ever / love in a vacuum kind of ship. It's definitely more about grown ups that have made some mistakes in the past. Which is probably why I like it so much!

I actually think K/B fits the normal pairing trend. The "best friends into lovers" thing is pretty common, and it usually has the feel of high school AU to it that appeals to a lot of people.

It's not about normal pairing trends—what I meant by the slash aesthetic is something a lot more specific than that, the sort of pairing that would end up in that "Us" video, the pairings that become foundational slash pairings. The kind of stuff that ends up at metafandom.
