IDK, I've written both for Homer, and I never felt like the academic writing was anything like writing fanfic.

As I read it, it seems the OP meant that Shakespeare would be more pleased about actual fanfiction written on TEH INTERNETZ or spiral-bound notebooks or whatever than the *Scholarly Analysis* side of things.
