Depends where you go. The main place is www.phantomoftheopera.com forums, and lots of the people who've been in the fandom for longest have read the book and there's lots of literary analysis, not just stupid fangirls, so I don't know what the OP's problem is. Though, there are stupid annoying moviebrat fangirls too.

The Fifth Cellar is a pan-canon fanfiction archive, too. It doesn't vet for quality, but at least it's not ff.n? And you can sort by book/musical/etc.

There's actually a lot of variety in the fandom. I find it difficult to believe that you hate all of the fans with the same vehemence: the Leroux purists, the callow Gerard Butler fangirls, the people who shipped Phantom/Christine and bashed Raoul until they saw the 2004 movie and had a change of heart, the batshit insane Phantom/Christine shippers who search through every adaptation (no matter how obscure) for validation, the defenders of Raoul's honor, and the Phantom/Raoul hatesex writers, to name a few. Personally, I have a pathetic crush on 2004!Raoul and his stupid wig. And I'm very fond of the managers. And I find the movie incredibly enjoyable, if rather stupid. And I've never had the chance to see the ALW musical, but I love the cast recording. And I think that the book is good within its genre, but not a masterpiece.

I'm sorry that you've had bad experiences, but not all Phans are bad. They just feel strongly about the book/movie/musical.
