Some people just connect instantly; all it took for me to become best friends with one of my friends was an hour in an airport together. Serious, trusting, loving friendships don't need ten years to develop. I know that Brennan is very different about how she forms relationships, but the show has shown that she and Angela have a special bond, and sometimes those don't need a lot of time to form.

The problem is that flashbacks are popular, but constructing complex, believable relationships in retrospect is too hard. That's why we get a terrible, hand-wavy backstory for Brennan&Angela and the OMG THEY WERE SOULMATES WHO TOTALLY ALMOST DID IT RIGHT OFF THE BAT retcon for Booth/Brennan.

The sad part is that the Bones writers just don't give a shit, so prepare yourself for more Nicholas Sparks-like levels of emotional realism in Season 6 ;-)

Yeah. I have to admit I fully expected the flash!bang! reaction for B/B, but seriously, I would have been happier if they hadn't actually told the 'how they met' story for Angela and Brennan and just let it stand that this was just the first time Angela was brought in on a case, but that they'd known each other before this.

Just too much "wow here comes the magic", team coming together, everything happened at once BS.

I totally know what you mean, I do. I hate when shows give a random, throw-away backstory to a fantastic relationship and never really go into it. (On that note, however, they may revisit. I don't think I've seen this episode you're referencing, but if what they said was just a flat mention, they may flashback to it again - Big Bang did that, and Sheldon and Leonard's friendship backstory went from "Oh, I needed a roommate" to...well, the spoilers expressed in secret 157. XD)

But honestly, sometimes, the chemistry is just there, and no backstory is needed. My closest friend and I met simply because I needed a place to sit at lunch. When you look back on it, it's silly and kind of shocking, like "Wow, this girl has known me inside and out for eight years, and none of it would've happened if there'd been an empty table in the cafeteria that day." And I mean, most of my friendships develop over a much longer span of time, or due to much grander occurrences (like Bones tends to be), but sometimes, it's just: BAM, friendship.

I think a lot of the flashback was a copout, but my best friend and I sort of had the same kind of relationship-- we were friends, and we hung out, but we were never OMGBFFS until... suddenly we were. It does happen.

Actually they wrote a better backstory into one of the episode but they cut the scene out, it wasn't a flashback but just a "do you remember the first time we met." It had an emotional impact and showed why they bonded. Either way Brennan and Angela friendship has been shafted for a long time how.

I keep watching Bones, but I sometimes think the show has two sets of writers: one lot who know what they're doing and turn out some good eps, another set who haven't got a clue and churn out some total dross. When I watch this show I can't believe how often they get it so wrong when they give us glimpses of how they can get it so right.
