Through a strange set of circumstances, he'd go back in time with the daughter he had with Inara, both to escape the Reaver apocalypse and to save the Earth so humanity never had to leave. In the past, he'd bury his pain in denial, acting like a sexually promiscuous clown as he wrote mystery books whose impact on pop culture would eventually shift the course of human history (as told to him by his best friend, Hari Seldon). But then Mal would meet a police investigator whose no-nonsense attitude reminded him of Zoe, and his camaraderie with her would in turn remind him of the family he left behind on Serenity. Desperate for more of this companionship, he would join up with her investigations, always masking his true skills unless it was absolutely necessary to save her life. Then one day, he would catch himself referring to Ryan and Esposito as Jayne and Wash. And he'd realize that the only way he could truly be part of this family was to tell everyone the truth... and to admit that his feelings for Beckett had blossomed into love.

(His mother? A Time Lord.)
