I only ever see this 'privilege' bullshit on here, what the fuck is the deal with it?

Seriously, I can't even...what? "Oh no, my situation means I'm not suffering as much as some other people potentially could be, what a horrible person I am!"

Stop that shit >:[ Be attracted to whomever you want, you don't have to deal with homophobia and prejudice for your attraction to be legitimate or acceptable. I have many gay/bi/trans friends (and I'm not heterosexual either) but because of where we live, nobody really cares or gives us shit for it. Should we feel guilty about our orientations because of that?

Privilege is a good thing, you should feel grateful, not guilty. Stop being a moron.

You are dumb. Educate yourself.

I read your pdf, and it taught me nothing of value that I didn't already know. Pretty much all it says is "Get this: Some people are at an advantage in certain situations due to being members of certain majority groups in society! You should be aware of that!" like WOAH NO WAY!!11 I don't feel that in any way invalidates my argument that you shouldn't feel guilty about being attracted to someone of the same sex just because you identify as straight. In fact, it specifically says to move away from guilt.

Would you like to discuss this further? What are you trying to say? It would nice if you could explain to me what led you to make the bold claim that I am dumb. My words were perhaps a bit harsh, and I'm sorry for that, but I really don't see how what I said makes me dumb.

I don't think that's what they're saying at all.

They're seen as heterosexual and they get all of the rights and privileges that come with that - no one's going to beat them up over it.

Indulging in same-sex attractions and actions but still being seen as heterosexual makes them feel guilty, because many homosexuals and bisexuals don't get to do that.

[identity profile] pants4pants.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
The "horrible person" thing was more about the general attitude I've seen here about privilege than this particular comment, but I put it in there because they sort of gave off that impression.

I get what they're saying, I just think feeling guilty about it is stupid.

Privilege is a good thing

But people not knowing what basic English words mean is a bad thing.

[identity profile] pants4pants.livejournal.com 2010-05-30 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I know what it means. Perhaps I should have worded it "Being privileged is a good thing". We may disagree on that but that doesn't mean I don't know what it means.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-05-30 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Um, either a) you DON'T know what it means (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/privilege) (and I'm still betting that's it, since people have a tendency to forget what it means), b) you're using "privilege" in a way that doesn't remotely apply in this context (which is unlikely, and would be stupid of you anyway), or c) you're a douche that doesn't see anything wrong with a group of people having advantages over another group that they did nothing to earn.

Take your pick.

Jesus Christ what is with people on the internet always taking the worst possible interpretation of things?

I was born in a first world country. This is a privilege. Despite being a privilege, my being born in New Zealand does not negatively impact on anyone else. I don't see how my privilege here is anything but a good thing. The fact that it is a privilege sucks, but it's still privilege that is beneficial to me and not detrimental to anyone else. The same applies to the person I was referring to. They have a situation where they receive benefit from something without the negative consequences often associated with it (although to be honest I don't quite see how. Is being attracted to someone really a benefit?). Their situation, while an apparent exercise of privilege, is not detrimental to anyone else around them in any way. How can it possibly be a bad thing and why the hell should they feel bad about it?

SO YES, PRIVILEGE IN THE CONTEXT OF THE POST I WAS REPLYING TO IS NOT A BAD THING, GOD DAMN.

I am so, so glad I am privileged enough to have been born in to a society where people don't waste their time beating themselves up about being privileged. It's unfortunate that you weren't so lucky, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be glad that I was.

'Kay? Didn't imply I wasn't born in a first-world country.

And if you don't think that our being born to first-world countries harms anyone else, take a look at how much of the world's resources first-world countries consume. That's a silly argument.

The benefits heterosexuals receive over others set up heterosexuality as the unquestioned norm, which is harmful to those who aren't heterosexual. In and of themselves, no, they wouldn't be harmful. Context.

(Although personally, if someone identifies as straight, and still is attracted to people of the same sex, I hardly think it is expressing privilege to feel, express or act on that.)

Ta!

[identity profile] pants4pants.livejournal.com 2010-05-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't imply you weren't either, it was just the first example I thought of.

In and of themselves, no, they wouldn't be harmful. Context.
This, basically. First world countries consuming large amounts of the world's resources is harmful, heterosexuality being the unquestioned norm is harmful, but that doesn't mean heterosexuality or first world countries are necessarily bad in and of themselves. Because of this I don't think one should feel bad just for being heterosexual or born in a first world country.

Also, I said I was born in New Zealand, we really don't consume much of the world's resources =P (you can ignore that, I'm just being stupid)

Anyway, thanks for this. Even if we don't agree (or do we? I'm not entirely sure we don't) you've given me a lot to think about, which is always good.
