"You guys are LARPing, aren't you? Pretty hard core, too."

"What is LARPing?"

[identity profile] ferricent.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha perfect :-D

GENRES!

[identity profile] ferricent.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that little comic thing your image is from.

what comic is this?

(Anonymous) 2010-06-05 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel too bad, OP. It's pretty much accepted that LARPers are at the bottom of the Geek Food Chain.

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
LARPers are minor losers compared to the SCA crowd.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there really that much of a difference? I'm not being factious, but I think they're pretty close to one another.

As a member of the SCA, I really object to this comment - not only was it completely uncalled for, it's also just plain rude.

I read your comment below (which I'm assuming is the basis for this one), and I have to say that I'm pretty sure you don't know what you're talking about. In my SCA group, while we can't assume titles without having them granted to us (which is actually quite useful, as it prevents everyone from declaring themselves royalty right off the bat), we can wear whatever type of costume we want to make/buy. While we do try to be historically accurate, we also understand that almost everyone is living on a shoestring budget, so the higher-ups aren't going to go crazy if you can't make everything perfectly period all the time. We also don't really require people to show up at every meeting - I've been known to disappear for months at a time, then return and be welcomed back in as if I'd never left.

I'm not saying the entire SCA is like that - obviously, you're going to run into assholes every so often, and if said assholes are higher up the food chain, you're going to have their groups being rather uptight. But you're making rather ridiculous generalizations about a group that's probably got hundreds of thousands of members all across the world, which is kind of a silly thing to do. And I resent the implication that participating in something I draw a considerable amount of joy from makes me a 'loser'.

Some people don't know how to have fun. Sad, really.

[identity profile] aubergine-pilot.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I was going to post that "geek hierarchy" flowchart here, but now I can't find it. Damn.

What, this?

I almost got busted, by my LARPer bf, because I LOL'ed so hard and loud at this secret. He even just sent me the link to that comic the other day! Thank you, OP, for reminding me that not fitting in to his hobby isn't a bad thing. *goes back to busily writing fanfiction*

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
All the LARPers I know are made of win, so...

[identity profile] nymosy.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
you don't have to go out and LARP, but yeesh, at least try and overcome your stupid prejudice if you know you're being closed-minded

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
What's closed-minded is the idea of "losers" in the first place. But I can't really blame you for that.

It seems like our entire society is so high-school mentality. Cool and uncool. You have to make a major personal effort to overcome that sort of thinking.

[identity profile] writerbunny.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Think what you like, anon. All I know is that my LARP is v. plot-driven and introduced me to the coolest, most creative bunch of people I know. (Since it's a steampunk LARP, all of the costumes and props have to be made rather than purchased, and they do amazing things.)

So, yeah, can't change your mind, but my pistol-wielding, cricket-playing, neo-Victorian field medic character says you're missing out, dude.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Funny because I know a lot of successful LARPers.

[identity profile] elfinblaze.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know... I'm not a LARPer but it sounds kind of fun to pretend to be someone else for a little while, to step out of your own life like that and just have fun. The LARPers I know are all really nice people, and when they're not in character they're perfectly sensible people with ordinary jobs and ordinary lives.

But then, I never understood the drive to be seen as "cool", I just figure, life's there to be enjoyed, as long as you're not hurting anyone else, do what you feel like, and don't let people get to you just because they think you're a "loser". *shrug*

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Most of the male LARPers I know get far more attractive gals chasing after them than the "cool" guys. I also know a lot of Marines and other military guys who LARP why don't care how uncool you think they might be until you do your own tour of getting shot at. Even then, they probably won't care that much.

[identity profile] puppy-tenchan.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 07:48 am (UTC)(link)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m9snjm7wLA Steampunk LARP

Just a few good examples. Yes, there are wacky LARPers out there who may or may not make the hobby look bad. Just like there are wacky artists, authors, athletes, poets, cooks, fans, actors etc. etc.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH I think this as well. I had a friend in high school who was a LARPer who actually tried to get me to participate and I was just completely embarrassed the whole time and refused to do anything but watch. It didn't help that it was in a public park downtown and everyone driving by could see us.

BTW she was a "healer" which meant she just ran around the field dancing and shit, she didn't even have a foam weapon. It was really stupid.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I always thought it looked like fun. Basically play-pretending, but in a way that's less likely to result in "I'm shooting you!" "Yeah, well I'm bullet-proof!" "Yeah, well I got a lazer." "Yeah, well I'm magic" etc.

Sometimes it's fun to be a kid.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-07 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
All the LARPers I ever knew (and I got dragged out for a weekend with them...crappiest weekend of my entire college experienc) were about 30 years old or more, still working crappy jobs and living with roommates, and had aspirations for something better that they really seemed unlikely to achieve because they were so mired in each other's shit, or else seemed to think they were God's gitft to the world when their only measure of comparison was to each other and so they never really got anywhere. As far as I know they're all still at the same place financially and emotionally, although probably with even more complicated drama.

It's fun to fantasize. Hell, I'd even argue that role playing is a useful and healthy thing to indulge in every once in a while. But these people took this shit so seriously that it was hard to take them seriously.

I hate LARPers. I doubt anyone is going to convince me that I should believe otherwise.

[identity profile] aunt-zelda.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're awesome and I can't wait to start LARPing myself!
