LARPers are minor losers compared to the SCA crowd.

Is there really that much of a difference? I'm not being factious, but I think they're pretty close to one another.

Well, with LARPing, you just make a character and join in, pretty much. I mean, there's "levels", but there's nothing really keeping you from participating fully. It's the same concept as table-top games like D&D, except you actually try to physically embody your character. It's also a lot more fantasy oriented. LARPers are also quicker to admit that, hey, they're just nerds pretending to be elves, wizards, vampires, etc.

With SCA, it's partially the same in that you are physically pretending to be your character. But they strive to be 100% realistic and historically accurate -- if you mess something up, they jump your ass. There's also a strict ranking system. You start out as a peasant and can only wear peasant costumes, and you have to work your way up through the ranks by attending every week and sucking up to the higher ranked people until they promote you. Only after months/years of ass kissing do you have permission to be a character who is a lord/lady and gets to wear neat costumes, etc. As a result, the higher ranked SCA people are super full of themselves and act like they are the baddest mother fuckers in the land. I run into them all the time at RenFaire events, and they treat non-SCA renaissance costumers like they are trash, and walk around like they own the joint.

So yeah. There's a pretty big difference, both in concept and in attitude. :/

Oh, I didn't know that about SCA. I knew a few people at my work who were into that thing and I just assumed it was LARP'ing but with more attention to detail.

But I can understand the SCA attitude, walking around like they own the place and such. I've seen some of the SCA people who are in a local fencing group at the RenFaires, and I'm sure if I messed up on some name about a sword or technique they'd be all over me for that mistake hehe. Which is why I just watch and don't talk haha.

As a member of the SCA, I really object to this comment - not only was it completely uncalled for, it's also just plain rude.

I read your comment below (which I'm assuming is the basis for this one), and I have to say that I'm pretty sure you don't know what you're talking about. In my SCA group, while we can't assume titles without having them granted to us (which is actually quite useful, as it prevents everyone from declaring themselves royalty right off the bat), we can wear whatever type of costume we want to make/buy. While we do try to be historically accurate, we also understand that almost everyone is living on a shoestring budget, so the higher-ups aren't going to go crazy if you can't make everything perfectly period all the time. We also don't really require people to show up at every meeting - I've been known to disappear for months at a time, then return and be welcomed back in as if I'd never left.

I'm not saying the entire SCA is like that - obviously, you're going to run into assholes every so often, and if said assholes are higher up the food chain, you're going to have their groups being rather uptight. But you're making rather ridiculous generalizations about a group that's probably got hundreds of thousands of members all across the world, which is kind of a silly thing to do. And I resent the implication that participating in something I draw a considerable amount of joy from makes me a 'loser'.

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's a little bit hard for me NOT to make sweeping generalizations when everything that I said is 100% accurate to literally every single SCA member I have ever run across, online or in-person, up until you. I'm not even exaggerating, and I'm not talking about one or two people. I'm talking about dozens of people over a period of probably 10 years. I can't go to the RenFaire here without running into some group of SCA people who will walk up and insult people, or parade around demanding people get out of their way so they can have a clear walking path (despite not being employees), etc. And a number of my more serious costuming friends who also enjoyed LARPing decided to check out some local SCA chapter here, and the group had this rigid non-nonsense set of rules that I listed down there.

And all the SCA people I've run into online (besides you) have been the most anal overbearing douchebags I have ever seen. Which is saying a lot, considering some of the other crowds I hang around -- when I think people are bigger assholes than 4chan, that's pretty significant.

So I apologize. I'm not just saying that to be snarky, I'm being genuine. I didn't mean to insult because, quite honestly, at this point I thought that's just how all SCA people were, considering that is all I have ever encountered in my life. I'm glad to hear that's not the case, though it makes me think even less of the horde of jerks I've run into so far.

The SCA members I used to run into were the ones who would 'sneak' into light-touch boffer LARPs and bring their rattan and wooden weapons so they could run out during battles and show the pansies how REAL fighting was supposed to be by beating the shit out of people, and brag about how everyone got butthurt and kicked them out because they were such 'good fighters.'

Though I have heard other SCA members online who said people like that tended to get kicked out of the SCA quickly because they don't like them any better.
