I don't get why people call troll. There are constantly people surfing lj at work or at school or writing in class right?

That really sucks for you although I'm sure you know that you shouldn't have been doing that in class and why your teacher found it disturbing. But what has happened has happened so I guess you'll just have to see a therapist. It isn't the worst thing. The therapist can help you with other problems?

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people are calling troll because of the attitude of the secret-maker, not the fact that they were writing fanfic in class.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I can imagine someone having that attitude. I mean it's okay for a teacher to call someone out if they're not paying attention but I guess to the OP and some people it's same the same as reading out love letters written during class. Like they know it's not allowed to write them but that doesn't mean the teacher should read them and even give them to the parents.

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fair, but... well, like the OP said, they were writing kinky noncon fic in a public environment, and I think it's fair to assume they're in high school. The teacher probably told OP's parents out of concern, which the love letter situation generally would not warrant.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but had the teacher not read what the OP had written in the first place she/he wouldn't have been concerned. I mean this might just be me but any notes my teachers confiscated went straight into the trash and they never read them no matter how much my classmates wanted to see whoever it belonged to humiliated by having it read aloud.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Hell, I made the mistake of showing *my teacher for lit mag* a story in which one character *wondered* about SM, figuring she wouldn't be bothered, since a lot of people wrote about sex.

I got asked if I was getting counseling. Not forced to go, no, and she didn't tell my parents. But yeah. Never assume such stuff is OK with Authority Figures.

This. All of the folks and their judgemental frothing in this thread is making me LOL. dead to rights they've been caught not paying attention in some way in school, because we all have at some point or another.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah exactly. I mean the OP didn't say that she was right to write fanfiction or that she didn't know it was forbidden.

It was less the teacher calling her out and more the teacher reading what she had written and showing it to the OP's parents which resulted in the OP having to get therapy.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

I used to write my diary in lessons, because the lessons were boring.

If a teacher had taken it and shown it to my headmistress and/or my parents, I would have been beyond furious.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-05 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You might have been furious, but in truth it would have been your own bloody fault. I don't update LJ at work when I know my boss could be reading my entries over my shoulder either.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-05 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, it could be the fault of the teachers for being so amazingly boring that writing my diary was the only way to stop myself throwing myself out the window.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-05 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If being bored was really driving you to suicide, you obviously could have used some therapy too.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-05 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh hell yes. But that's another point entirely.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-05 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
While I understand where you're coming from (various grades were painfully boring for me, and I'll agree that North American education systems are nowhere near perfect), you should still feel lucky to be receiving an education. Not everyone gets one, and various people have much worse problems within a school system than it being 'boring'.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-06 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
1. I'm not North American.

2. No, I do not feel lucky to have "received an education". I would feel lucky if I'd spent those hours educating myself at the library instead.

3. I had far worse problems than school being boring too, ty.

4. This all has nothing to do with Dexter porn fic anymore, does it? It's just all this "whaah whaah you should be paying attention to class or you deserve to get major shit" is making me want to vomit.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-06 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
2. No, I do not feel lucky to have "received an education".

Let's stop at 2.

I know this is a shitty card to play in these kinds of debates, but you really, really should feel lucky to have what you have, you blind little infant.

"whaah whaah you should be paying attention to class or you deserve to get major shit"

I think very few people here are saying that. I can obviously only speak for myself, but I have no problem with not paying attention in class. I don't necessarily have a problem with doing private things in class either, but if you do do them, you shouldn't be surprised if soon they're not private anymore. It's kind of like having sex with someone while your husband/wife is in the next room and then being surprised when you're found out.

Not paying attention in class is one thing (which I agree that most people have done at some point). Being surprised when your teacher doesn't ~respect your privacy~ while you're doing that is something else.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well my teachers mostly never read any notes they caught students passing and just threw them in the trash.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-05 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of mine didn't read such notes either, but some did. I don't think it's very smart to do something truly private during class, and it looks like the OP learned this the hard way.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course I'm not saying it's smart but it's not going to help the OP if I say "Well you shouldn't have been writing kinky fanfiction in class in the first place" because you can bet they've heard it a million times.

I just get why the OP might be angry especially since it had such bitter consequenzes. It wasn't just detention. Therapy is a big step especially if you don't have a problem. Or you don't think you do. OP might have other issues that they're not aware of but I won't get into that.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-05 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I do get what you're saying. I don't think there's anything wrong with writing kinky fanfiction, and not paying attention in class is no big sin either - but combining these two things can have unfortunate (and sometimes out-of-proportion) consequences. I guess my point is that there's a time and place for doing things you don't want people to find out.

[identity profile] verschreibsel.livejournal.com 2010-06-05 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Still a less drastic consequence would have been better. But like I said it happened so now the OP has to deal with it.

Exactly. I mean I understand telling her she probably shouldn't have been writing it in class, but people are telling her she probably needs therapy and as someone who has been threatened with therapy like that before I'm just baffled that more people aren't also being comforting and telling her she's going to be fine or SOMETHING.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2010-06-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I got caught doodling Marilyn Manson in class once, and yeah, that wasn't fun.
