I think an issue here is that a lot of canons have no idea how to handle rich people, so the ficcers are a mix of "also don't know" and "have to remain true to canon even if they know better outside it".

[identity profile] affablyevil.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a pretty good point, OP. But yeah, there would definitely be wank... and trolling probably. :|

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd honestly be interested to see it. I don't write rich people (lol, proletariat!) but it'd be interesting. :D You'd get trolled badly though.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it would be an interesting community, even though I'm not really in any fandoms where what you're talking about is an issue.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there's wealthy, there's rich, there's stinking rich, and there's megabucks rich. And they all live very differently. Most ficcers I've read understand that the first and the last are different, but they kind of don't know how to handle the two in the middle and so lump them into one or the other.

Then there's the Old Money vs. New Money problem and oh, god, now everybody's classism is showing and I'll just shut up now.

Might be wanky, but idk..I don't think it's a bad idea. I'm not rich by any means, but I am a good SAVER which means I have a bit more money than some of my friends and they just make the dumbest assumptions @_@

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)

As someone who grew up dirt fucking poor and redneck as all hell, I have the opposite problem. Very few canons or fandoms portray accurately what it's like to live in that kind of world either.

Most fandoms (and the countries that produce the majority of fangirls and fanboys) are made of middle class peoples who have no clue how to portray experiences or reality outside of their own norms. It sucks, but whatcha gonna do?

I think it would be a great idea overall to have a safe place to ask various questions.

But please OP, if you are going to do it, make sure it's good anon. I hope I don't sound condescending or anything, but if people could put two and two together, it could be dangerous for the particularly wealthy individuals. Or the wealthy-enough-to-worth-the-trouble-but-not-enough-to-justify-uber-security-yet types.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's such a bad idea. A character in one of my fandoms is supposed to be from Old Money, and a lot of fanfic writers don't seem to have any sense of what that means.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean, anon. I don't come from money, but my family's business caters to the "very comfortable" set, so seeing the difference between my father's clients and what's portrayed in fanfic and popular media is always good for a laugh.

[identity profile] neth-dugan.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good idea! Not just for you and your experiences but also for those of other... wealth ranges. From the dirt poor to the really massively stupidly rich that'd rival Bill Gates. Or at least people closer to those things than the person asking.

A person above had a point about this differing from country to country. I'd think this is especially true for the poor because if you're rich you're.... rich. But if you're dirt poor with no money the mechanisms in place to help (or not) you will differ greatly from area to area. America has no public health care, we do. Benefits. Shops, shopping, school.

But also for the rich. The most experience I have is a friend of the family who whilst considerably better off than mine is probably poorer than yours.

So yes, a comm like that would be a great idea. And yes some mechanism in place so anons can reply if they're worried about letting people know their financial status and stuff along with it.

But OP? It isn't you're fault you're rich, or that your family is and you're better off than me. I know that can get some... instinctual reactions from people in my class and those around it but people should be able to get over that.

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it would be interesting to have such a comm. I always enjoy learning things, especially about how other people live. But as you say, it would likely have tons of wank associated.

Good luck. I hope you find someone to talk about this with besides F!S.

This is, quite possibly, the MOST FUCKING PATHETIC complaint I have ever seen on this comm. JFC.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-20 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, first you'd need to open the comm with a good sockpuppet, and then you'd need to keep anon commenting enabled, which would means trolls like wow, but maybe screening comments to be released by mods would help. It would work better if such a comm was open to all economic groups. "We're wealthy, ask us how we're special," comes off as, well, you know how it comes off. But if people could ask questions that pertained to class levels of any kind, it would be twice as useful and a bit less prone to looking tacky.

I've seen a few questions that relate to economic situations in [livejournal.com profile] little_details -- specifically a discussion about whether or not a character could afford an apartment in NYC, and where it would likely be located, that kind of thing.

Or, failing that, maybe just write up a good essay on the more common failings of people writing things that relate to your background, and post it with a sockpuppet, and pimp it around to comms that maintain resource lists.

I've been upper middle class and can-barely-afford-ramen poor, but I know I could use a beta when I move outside my own experiences in writing, just like in any other aspect of writing.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-20 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I think this is a great idea, possibly for people of all economic standings. I'd definitely be interested.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-20 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
As someone not rich, but who works for someone who is extremely -and I do mean extremely- wealthy, I have laughed hard enough to show my boss, and his kids, some things in fics I've found before.

I think it would be nice if rich people didn't get such a kick out of how little most people know about them. Because some of it is awfully silly.

And, as someone who grew up dirt poor, it would be nice to see the other end portrayed correctly as well. If it were to happen, and I wish it would, and wouldn't get trolled -I'll just be unrealistic in my corner- because I think a lot of writers could learn a lot.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-20 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I am so sorry your parents cut you off at 18. There is no excuse for that from wealthy parents. I came from rich folks (well, half rich--my parents are divorced and my dad is rich while my mom is middle class) and if my dad had not paid for college I would have stopped talking to him. It's passive aggressive and cruel (not the least because parental income completely disqualified me from any financial aide.)

But anyway, rich people live vastly different lives depending on their location, personality, and whether they're rich or really, really, ridiculously stinking rich. My dad and his wife are the kind of people who shop at middle class stores for clothes and accessories and drive Toyota Camrys but own a mansion, expensive jewelry and art, and take lots of international trips primarily for biking, hiking, and scuba. Some of their friends drive Rolls Royces and refuse to wear anything but designer clothes and do not do any sort of activity during which they might sweat besides golf and tennis). It's a lot harder to generalize about rich people lifestyles than it is about poor people because rich people have so many more options and resources financially.

You know, this is interesting. People on this comm are willing to tear down a woman for being confident and outspoken - and yet they seem to be totally chill about her being very, very wealthy.

I'm not sure what this says about our culture but it's really making me think. (why does everyone seem to want to chill with you OP?)

I have to agree with the folks that say this is a petty complaint. I mean, big fucking deal. Of all the things fiction fucks up, getting the portrayals of the extremely rich wrong is like at the bottom of the list of my concerns.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I've known a few rich people (like, people with a million dollars or more) and I will say that for the most part, they have a hard time understanding working class people, sometimes looking down them (but only if they are white, excuse me, "rednecks," I've noticed), either that or they tend to be condescending or patronizing ("they don't know any better!" etc.) I don't know about other stereotypes, but as someone from a lower middle class household it always annoys me

If you're wondering if I'm making this up, I'll tell you about some of these people. One of is my best friends' dad, who made ridiculous amounts of money running a clothing business and later sold his shares, bought and sold real estate, and is now pretty much penniless because he was a stupid hippy New-Ager who spent ten years not working or managing his finances because he would rather spend it all on crystals and stupid shit. Though he did manage to start an orphanage (in Peru, WTF)

The other guy was a mutual acquaintance I met through said friend who was a flaming dickbag, he was only a millionaire because he got bitten pretty badly by a dog when he was a child and his family sued the owner (BTW he is fine from what I could tell, I think he was bit in the face but his face is now fine, he's not physically disfigured or impaire in anyway). He's just a total douche, he once threw away a coat that he'd left in my apartment because I let my husband wear it. He acts like a total fucking spoiled brat.

The last guy I know is actually pretty cool, he's a friend of my husband's, in law school and in his early 20s, his dad owns a wine business and I don't really know him that well, but he drives an old Volvo and lives a pretty normal existence, even though judging from his house, his parents have a lot of wealth. He is pretty much the only rich guy I know who appreciates what he has and doesn't feel guilty about it, or entitled to anything. I think he might be the only rich guy I've ever known who is normal, though.

I'm not saying that the stereotypes are true or that these people are right for writing bad characters, just that from my experience I find it rather disturbing how true many of the stereotypes are when it comes to some rich people

Umm, the only rich people from canon I like to read about is from Ouran High, and they aren't rich so much as super crazy billionaire rich. And from what I read about the wealthiest people in the world, as crazy as that series is, being a parody, it probably isn't that far wrong.
