I've read a lot of fanfic that really does compare favorably to Twilight, so... that's probably not the best example.

No, they just meant that bitter people tend to say that, I think.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have to admit that's always in the back of my mind when I see someone complaining about that, too.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Word. That's why I feel weird ever bringing it up, even amongst friends. I'm surprised most people aren't like me in that regard, actually.

[identity profile] quadruplify.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG THIS. I've seen this happen so often, and it really pisses me off. >B\ Of course, I actually haven't written anything myself, but I have reasons for that. :P

What amuses me is that they treat it like some kind of accomplishment.

Dude, everyone is better than Stephanie Meyer. Everyone. (Except possibly the venom cock lady and Terry Goodkind.) It's not like it's something fucking special.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Goodkind's crazier, but he still writes better than Meyer when he tries. The first couple books were pretty good. Meyer can't write to save her life.

I find successful bad writers cheering. If someone with prose like that can get published, then I totally can!

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, even if someone is on the same level as Meyer, when it comes to ability=>money equation, they are allowed to be bitter.

[identity profile] ceredwensirius.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about OP. Though I have to admit I find it a little hysterical when the writer is crap and complains in open public forums that they don't get reviews. There might very well be a reason for that.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-20 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
when I write in well-known fandoms, if I post to the big comms, I get comments. if I don't post to the big comms, I don't.

if I write in small, non-existant-except-to-me fandoms, I get no comments either.

...does this make me a bad writer or simply one who does not write and post to larger fandoms/comms?

[identity profile] ceredwensirius.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well if they are non-existent-except-to-you then who is there to read your work?

First, I don't know you or your work, anonymouse, so I have no idea what your writing is like. But I have written for big ships and I have written for micro ships, so I do know the frustration of posting and not getting many reviews. Sometimes it can seem like you are posting to a void.

My point was about specific known writers whose work I was familiar who post, get no comments and then whine to all and sundry about it. I'm no stranger to the panic of not getting reviews for a piece I worked hard on. I would sympathize but it doesn't sound like you are complaining.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I assume what they've written is technically well done (grammar) and maybe tending towards elegant language, but ultimately is kind of boring. Maybe the pace is too slow for the readers to slog all the way through. Maybe because it's making much to do out of something really trivial. Or it's tackling a subject that has been tackled in a similar way by dozens of others -- maybe not quite as elegantly, but still closely enough that the story just doesn't seem fresh or exciting. Or it doesn't sell situation as being worth the time and effort to read. Or it's preachy or pretentious. Or the characters come off as being unattractive and unpleasant.

The result is the same: A technically excellently written story that follows all the rules of literature and should have hit the ball out of the park, yet falls flat. Meanwhile the person who wrote mindless, poorly executed (but extremely fun to read) crap keeps raking in the comments. Because despite the fact that it doesn't have all the things it should to be literature, it's got spark and spunk and it lights people's imaginations on fire.

[identity profile] humblebot.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I have a friend that considers herself better than Meyers. I consider her better as well.

[identity profile] demiincarnate.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I gotta say, humility and realism about one's writing abilities is an important quality of a writer; it makes them willing to improve. People who think they're too good already are never gonna get anywhere.
