about nph

I know. what is worse is that I *can* donate blood and I haven't ever because I'm too timid. If you (anon) can than you should in his honor or something (and I should too!)

TL;DR ABOUT BLOOD DONATION

[identity profile] vaultedthewall.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
At any given time they only have a couple days worth of blood on-hand and that's assuming no crisis occurs. Types like O- are gone through quickly because everyone can take that, so if there's no time or ability to 'type' someone then they use that. And there's so much that keeps a person from being able to donate blood that every little bit counts. If you've had gay sex, have had sex with someone who has had gay sex, EVER done drugs in the past that used a needle, have too low an iron count in your system, are underweight, if you've lived overseas recently- the list goes on. I try to donate frequently but I have a problem with blood iron levels so I get turned away usually. My aunt is actually type O-, but because over three decades ago she had a colorful past involving needle-sharing drug usage, she can never donate blood except to family, even though in all this time she's never shown any signs of HIV or any other diseases that could have cropped up from it.

If you start donating blood as soon as you're old enough to and you keep doing it every time you get you can donate enough blood to save one thousand lives in your single lifetime, though. And all you gotta do is be stuck with a needle (that you can barely feel, they numb the hell out of your arm first) for a minute or two. And they give you a cookie and/or orange juice afterward! Even if you get screened out (which, if it would be dangerous for you to give blood they will - your safety is important too!), they'll usually give you a cookie and orange juice for the effort.

...The only good presentation I ever did in speech class was about the importance of donating blood.

YOU CAN ALSO DONATE STRAIGHT-UP PLATELETS AS WELL AS PLASMA. Platelets are needed for several conditions and diseases, and have a shelf-life of only five days!

I never understand why people don't just lie about whether they've ever had gay sex.

It gets screened for HIV etc anyway, doesn't it?

Re: TL;DR ABOUT BLOOD DONATION

[identity profile] vaultedthewall.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, they take a small sample prior to actually taking your blood for donation and run it through a machine that screens it for any reason why it would be harmful to yourself or others should you try to give blood - that's about as far as I get 99% of the time because of my iron deficiency.

Re: TL;DR ABOUT BLOOD DONATION

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason why those questions are asked is because those behaviors (interveinous drug use, unprotected sex, soliciting prostitutes, etc.) are all high-risk behaviors for H.I.V. and more.

Besides, the screening tests are not 100%. High-probability, yes, in the 90's, but not 100%. By deferring donors who are high-risk for Mad Cow, H.I.V., Hepatitis C, and the like (which still leaves 60% of the populace), the chance of having a false-negative becomes infinitessimally small.

If someone lies about a high-risk behavior, and they are asymptomatic, believing themselves healthy even though they are infected, there is always that small chance that their infection can be spread into the blood supply. After all, there are windows of time during which infections are latent, and 1 in 4 HIV-positive people are unaware that they are infected. (http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/testing/resources/factsheets/healthcare.htm)

bit OT, but hey

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I was turned down as a blood donor when I lived in the US because I'd lived in the UK during the Mad Cow scare, even though I was a strict vegetarian all those years. :(

It seemed weird to me because imagine if the UK refused to take blood from people who lived in the UK during the Mad Cow years.

Re: bit OT, but hey

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can't donate blood in Canada because I lived in England in the 80's. Which used to make me happy to have a reason because I had a phobia of needles, but now I hate that I can't.

Re: bit OT, but hey

[identity profile] vaultedthewall.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe someday in the future we will have a 100% accurate blood-screening process, and then you can donate! SAVE UP YOUR BLOOD UNTIL THEN! NO DATING VAMPIRES.

[identity profile] runonmoonlight.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
What if I used the vampire to save up my blood?

Re: TL;DR ABOUT BLOOD DONATION

[identity profile] spazzer-mctwich.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
another reason the gay thing makes no since is that it is recommended by most experts that a short quarantine period would be more helpful and beneficial.

Re: TL;DR ABOUT BLOOD DONATION

[identity profile] ember-reignited.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*applause*

Also, I just have to add this, because it is important:

BE WELL-HYDRATED.

I have given blood somewhere in the ballpark of ten times, and my only bad experience was when I failed to stay properly hydrated. Drink lots of water starting twenty-four-hours beforehand, and during that period avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and sugary drinks.

Re: TL;DR ABOUT BLOOD DONATION

[identity profile] vaultedthewall.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! Hydration hydration HYDRATION.

Also when they tell you to apply pressure afterward? DO SO. (If they don't tell you to, REMIND THEM). The most painful part of blood donation is if you don't apply pressure to where they drew the blood for long enough afterward - the bruise that comes from that hurts way more than the actual blood drawing.

Thanks for this info. I have O blood and always turn down the Red Cross when they call my house (actually, my sister would while I was at college and not at home). I'm definitely going to donate now, though. I had no idea blood was so scarce.

Re: TL;DR ABOUT BLOOD DONATION

[identity profile] vaultedthewall.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I was actually kind of scared myself when I researched the actual numbers and saw how close it frequently gets cut. Yay for donating, though! Hi-5, anon! I'm going in as soon as I can to try again, too! I've been trying to keep up on foods that boost blood-iron. FINGERS CROSSED!

Re: TL;DR ABOUT BLOOD DONATION

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
What bothers me is that with the other questions, they ask if you've done those things within the past certain period of time, but for gay sex, it asks if you've ever done it. So it's not like "Oh, you'll be able to donate the next blood drive, but not this time because of what you did recently", it's more like they don't ever want your blood now.

More TL;DR

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Where I live (Perth, Australia) they only ask if you've had gay sex/sex with someone who may have had gay sex in the last 12 months, along with some other questions.

Questions shamelessly taken straight from the red cross website:
WHO CAN GIVE BLOOD – FIND OUT MORE
Most people are able to give blood if they:
*are fit, healthy and not suffering from a cold, flu or other illness at the time of donation
*are aged between 16-70 years (in QLD and WA 16-17 year olds require parental consent)
*weigh more than 45kg (16-17 year olds need to weigh more than 50kg)
*drink up in the 24 hours before donation, especially in warm weather, and have at least 4 good-sized glasses of water/juice in the 3 hours before donating (plasma and platelet donor need to drink at least 6 to 8 glasses)
*eat something in the 3 hours before donating
*bring ID. Please bring at least one form of photo identification.

SEXUAL ACTIVITY - IS THERE ANY KIND OF SEXUAL ACTIVITY THAT WILL AFFECT MY ABILITY TO DONATE BLOOD?
If you have any reason to believe you may have acquired an infection through unprotected sex, you should not donate.
Safe sex practices are vital to the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. However, 'protected sex' is not 100% effective and therefore the Australian Red Cross Blood Service's guidelines relating to sexual activity are based on the prevalence of infection in certain population groups.
The following questions are asked in regard to sexual activity:
*Have you ever thought you could be infected with HIV or have AIDS?
*In the last 12 months have you engaged in sexual activity with someone who you think might answer yes to any of the questions on the use of drugs, partner with HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HTLV, or treatment with clotting factors?
*Since your last donation or in the last 12 months have you had sexual activity with a new partner who currently lives or has previously lived overseas?
Within the past twelve months have you:
*Had male to male sex?
*Had sexual activity with a male who you think might be bisexual?
*Been a male or female sex worker (e.g. received payment for sex in money, gifts or drugs?)
*Engaged in sex with a male or female sex worker?
If the answer is 'yes' to any of the above questions, then a 12 month deferral is applied.

Male to male sex fact sheet (specifically states 12 months)
http://www.donateblood.com.au/admin/file/content1/c5/Male%20to%20male%20sex%20Fact%20Sheet.pdf

People who cannot donate full blood(*)/at all:
Abattoir workers* (Plasma only for 12 months)
Had acupuncture * (Plasma only for 4 months)
Had antibiotics (5 days min)
Had a blood transfusion (12 months)
Pregnant/breastfeeding (not advised while breastfeeding, but if 9 months after childbirth, it is allowed)
Had cancer (5 years)
Had a piercing: (ears) if done in sterile environment, plasma only for 24 hours. If unsure about sterility, no donations for 12 months. (other piercing) If done in sterile environment, plasma only for 4 months, once again, if unsure about sterility, no donations for 12 months.
Had chickenpox (4 weeks)
Ever had chronic fatigue syndrome (apparently this policy will be reviewed in 2 years as new information about the link between it and a virus is investigated)
Been in prison/lockup for a period of more than 72 hours (12 months)
Ever used intravenous drugs not prescribed by a registered medical practitioner.
Had yellow jaundice' or hepatitis associated with glandular fever (12 months)
Low haemoglobin (iron) - can't donate only while the count is low
High haemoglobin (iron) - can only donate with Doctor's approval
Ever had a heart attack
Had Hepatitis A/B (12 months)
Ever had Hepatitis C
Lived in the UK for 6 months between 1980/1996
Have Multiple Sclerosis
Osteoporosis - can't donate platelets.
Miscarriage (1st/2nd trimester) - six months
Miscarriage (3rd trimester) - nine months
Have Systematic Lupus Erythematosus
Got a tattoo (12 months)

And there's more but I've wasted enough time typing these out as it is. The point is that there are plenty of things that prevent people from giving blood.

I wish I could donate blood. :\ It always makes me so sad that I can't.
