Falling for traps..? I THINK I'M HAVING A CASE OF THE DUMB PLS EXPLAIN D:
ext_590805: (Curious - Doctor Who)

[identity profile] vontriz.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This'll explain it in a nutshell: the person in that image is actually a guy.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH. Okay, I understand now. But OP, wouldn't that just be bisexuality? Eh, maybe I'm too tired and overheated for F!S today xD

[identity profile] chickscream.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
A character that looks like a very pretty girl, but has a penis because they are trans or a crossdresser.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea someone explained it to me up above. I still feel a little dumb though x.x

[identity profile] chickscream.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay, if you don't know the term and don't know that Bridget is a boy, you can't be expected to figure it out. :3

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
What is Bridget even from? The picture and name are familiar to me but I cannot remember the details apparently.

[identity profile] chickscream.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
A Guilty Gear game, I believe. I'm not sure which one, but I know he fights with a yoyo and a teddy bear!

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
OMG. No wonder! I don't play GG, but my brother LOVES it and he used to cosplay one of the characters with a group. Okay, now I'm with it :D

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
That's OK. I'm stillenvisioning an old wooden mousetrap baited with cheese.

[personal profile] ex_mrs260625 2010-06-19 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
To make it clear -- the word "trap" is not the sort of terminology you want to use. It's bigoted, hateful, and invokes the pathetic excuses of everyone who's ever murdered, beaten, or raped a trans person.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I understood it as sort of a stupid internet colloquialism used to refer to anime characters more than anything. I doubt anyone refers to transpeople as "traps" irl.

[identity profile] bunnymcfoo.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
just because it's used exclusively online doesn't make it any less offensive or bigoted. Transgendered people come online too. :/

[personal profile] ex_mrs260625 2010-06-19 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I don't doubt it. The "trap" mentality is a pervasive and dangerous meme used against transwomen irl.

In addition, see bunnymcfoo's comment. I'm not the only trans person reading this post, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's spitting mad right now to see so many people using that word in such a blase manner.

What the hell are you talking about? Where do you think the word "trap" comes from? It's very common bigoted slang for a trans person, especially used by people who feel they have been "tricked" by them. And, as [livejournal.com profile] mrs260 said, often used by attackers to justify hate crimes.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Where do you think the word "trap" comes from?

4chan, of course. :/

I apologize if I offended anyone, but I've never seen it being used in a hateful way-- that's just my own experience, though, and if people actually use it as a slur... that's just shitty.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-19 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as I know, traps generally aren't trans, though, and I've never heard the term used when referring to a character who is actually trans.

[personal profile] ex_mrs260625 2010-06-19 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not that familiar with anime; I thought from the first few comments that it was referring to trans characters. (Male-identified cross-dressers, then?)

It's still a scary term to hear -- the cultural assumptions it evokes are used to condone violence against cross-dressers as well as transwomen. It would be nice if the OP had picked something more neutral and with less violent cultural baggage attached, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-20 03:33 am (UTC)(link)

So... you don't even actually know the meaning of the term. But nevertheless you're confident that you can lecture others on its horrible implications. Horrible implications which could in no way exist purely in the mind of someone who is taking the term out of context. (I'll give you a hint, for free: the same corner of the Internet that gave us the term "trap" for a crossdresser such as Bridget is the very same corner that gave us the adage "Everyone's gay for Bridget.")

[personal profile] ex_mrs260625 2010-06-20 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I know the meaning of the term outside anime fandom. I was unaware that anime fans had invented an almost identical but bigotry-free version.

I am willing to believe that anime fans are using a direct translation of a Japanese term without being aware of the Western cultural narrative that makes it so horrible in English. That being said, I would recommend that you refrain from using the term outside your corner of the internet. It really is most offensive.

[identity profile] deliriousminuet.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether someone's a trap is totally irrelevant to them being or not being trans. Traps are a game people play with other people on the internet, it's not an identity. Unless you're way, way too into trolling.

[personal profile] ex_mrs260625 2010-06-19 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I am unfamiliar with this game. Explain it, please.

[identity profile] deliriousminuet.livejournal.com 2010-06-19 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's mostly played on /b/, so that'll tell you a lot. /b/ gets a lot of camwhores, people taking pictures of themselves and posting them because they're that desperate for attention, and the female ones get a lot of drooling "OMG you're so hot can we see your tits I'm masturbating to you right now." So the trap is a man who dresses up as a woman, or just takes pictures from angles that make him look like a woman, gets a few people going with the "jacking off right now you're so hot," then the last pic in the series is his cock or something and the people encouraging camwhoring turn out to have been masturbating to a guy. Originally this was embarrassing, but at this point it's /b/'s version of a mainstream kink, people go looking for traps.

I'm sure there have been traps who were trans, but I'd be surprised if many of them were. It seems more like an interest in cross dressing meeting a love of trolling. It's all still pretty horrifying, but not in a specifically offensive to trans people way, more in a general /b/ way.

[personal profile] ex_mrs260625 2010-06-19 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. Good to know there's at least one context in which it's not a direct attack on trans people. (The secret would seem not to be using your context, unfortunately, unless the depicted character is in the habit of trolling /b/!) :0)

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yea I got it since people explained. I thought OP meant something else and was totally confused @_@
