I like to think that Laura Roslin was a stronger person than to let her self-identity be destroyed by any other person involved in her life.

The choices she made were still hers. They always have been.

Doesn't matter if Bill is a douchebag or not.

The problem is Laura Roslin is a fictional construct created and written by men. For the first oh - 3.5 seasons, she was written to have agency. The narrative allowed us to see how Laura Roslin reacted and shaped events and how she, herself, reacted to things like her illness. It also gave her things we still consider problematic for women to have, even in US society -- things like near unlimited political power, significant sway over military matters, no husband and children and a sense that she had no regrets and didn't need them. Even when robbing her of her physical power, the show allowed her to maintain her mental and political power -- she ordered the assassination of an enemy and ordered the late-term abortion of a potential threat.

And then -- the males (and one female) constructing her narrative decided not only to rob her of her physical strength but to to take away her political power and her agency. We didn't see how events that would affect the power of the president affected her. She was effectively cut out from any strategy sessions. She effectively disowned all of her history -- a history that included being an ambitious woman having a cabinet-level job position and SAVING THE FREAKING HUMAN RACE more than once -- to say that she was only happy when she was Bill Adama. Her male writers took away everything that complicated her and reduced her to an old-fashioned female narrative: physically weak, politically impotent and completed by her man.

THIS.

And I will also add that for me it wasn't just that she was "just happy with Bill Adama," but she was happy with him when he was all OMG PITY ME *GLUG GLUG GLUG* MOAR BOOZE! BEING AN ADAMA IS SO HARD! And because of this, her entire character was faded into the background to the point her death became merely an afterthought in a half-assed shitty epilogue.

Yes, I forgot that! And the whole, oh, let's not see how Laura dying is affecting LAURA but lets have another scene where Adama drinks and pukes or VIGOROUSLY BRUSHES HIS TEETH.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

IDK, I think I saw a lot of how her dying was affecting her, what with her jogging and struggling to come to terms with her lack of physical strength. Seemed like she resisted it to the very end, she didn't just lay down and die IMO

And what's wrong with Adama giving a shit about the people around him WTF

decided not only to rob her of her physical strength

Okay, I can understand your argument except for this. SHE HAD CANCER AND WAS DYING WHAT DID YOU EXPECT

(Anonymous) 2010-06-20 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Um...she was cancer-free throughout most of 2.5 and 3. RDM made a conscious decision to bring the cancer back because he basically admitted he couldn't figure out what to do with the character w/o the cancer and therefore, he narratively took away her physical strength.

TBH I was annoyed she didn't die of cancer a lot earlier. It seemed stupid to mention that she was dying and then have it go "into remission" and then get worse and vice versa, it was like a damn soap opera.

Why did she even have to have cancer in the first place is the real question

[identity profile] rmg.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
If the cancer had just vanished forever, it would have basically been Chekhov's cancer (and also Chekhov's Dying Leader I guess) not going off before the last act. :V

[identity profile] quarantedeux.livejournal.com 2010-06-20 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
She was the Dying Leader. That's kind of her thing.

Would I have preferred it if she hadn't gotten sick again? Yes. But she'd been the Dying Leader from Pythia from the beginning. So I was unsurprised that when the narrative focus was back on the search for Earth, her cancer came back.
