Plus, Bowser likes being bad. Peach doesn't think too highly of his menacing actions and at most they're tentative pals in the sidegames, Bowser's not likely to give up his evil ways even for true love and she's not likely to rush into his arms and give him a chance after he's kidnapped her so many times.

What do you mean Mario doesn't show any affection? It's subtle, yes, but he clearly does - right off the top of my head, the first thing that comes to my mind is the end of New Super Mario Bros. Wii - when he saves her, he does this classy bow, she kisses him, and he literally jumps up and down going YAAAAAY.

And the reason it seems like Peach always asks for his company while Mario never does is because that's how the games get started - Mario gets invited to something Peach is doing, Bowser catches wind of it and starts to raise trouble. Besides, she's a princess, he's a plumber, he probably doesn't invite her to his place because he just lives in a regular old house and he doesn't think she'd be too impressed or have much to do.

See, maybe I think too much about this, but I just think Mario is quite possibly one of the most lovably heroic characters in gaming, and it bugs me to see people downplay him for whatever reason. People like to make jokes about how "oh he's prolly just saving her to get cake", "oh he just wants to get laid", but in the games, it's pretty obvious that if he wanted to, he wouldn't even HAVE to go save Peach, he's just always done it because it's the right thing to do.

I really don't mind Bowser/Peach, and it can be really cute. And yes, in the RPGs, Bowser is generally a lot more lovable and a lot less evil, but in the actual platformers, dude's actually pretty serious about his evil deeds. I can get behind the idea that they're all actually friends and this is just what Bowser kinda does, but sometimes an asshole is just an asshole.

Bowser doesn't care about what Peach wants. I don't think he knows how to be nice. Peach doesn't need someone who will be overprotective and obsessive about their relationship. She needs someone who will actually be kind and sensitive around her. Whether or not Mario is an appropriate love interest, and I'm not saying he is, Bowser is certainly a bad match.

I read once, on a tvtropes article, (paraphrasing) that one's viewpoint about this relationship (MarioPeachBowser) was a very good Rorschach test substitute.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to disagree with this. Bowser downright loves being an evil jackass, and while I do agree he has a genuine crush on Peach, there's no hell of a way he'll give up his evil ways for true love. As soon as he captures Peach and gets rid of Mario, he'll mostly likely take over her kingdom and start an awful tyranny while keeping Peach in the side as a trophy.

Besides, Bowser himself implied one of the reason he kidnaps Peach and tries to woo her is because he needs a "mother" for his children, whether Peach likes it or not.

Also, it's pretty clear Mario and Peach are good friends at the very least, it's just subtle because, lol Nintendo, gotta keep the main character a blank slate for gameplay reasons or whatnot. But they do have their moments, like Peach visiting his house, sending him invitations and letters, watching fireworks together, and so one and so forth. There's a major difference of status between a regular plumber and a princess who runs a kingdom, it wouldn't be quite chivalrous for him to seek her out like she does with him. But hey, Peach going through that trouble and her advisors allowing it says something right.

But anyways that's just me.

This whole discussion cracks me up.

A mutual relationship CAN happen in fan intepretations (a REAAAAAAALLLLLY good fanfic author can make anything realistic), but I don't see Bowser turning a new leaf for anyone.

If anything, a mutual bonding between Peach and Bowser would be extremely awkward. Peach will keep baking cakes, Bowser will keep being a jackass, and they would oftentimes bicker like a dysfunctional married couple.

Bowser is good at this. He was totally like that with Chippy in Bowser's Inside Story.

Anyone remember that?

I ship this so hard. Mostly because I play the RPGs more than anything, where Bowser is more of a lovable asshole. I agree with the people saying it's probably not a healthy relationship, but there's something about it that just makes me squee. Probably because I am just a big sappy Bowser fantard and I want him to be smooshy wooshy happy.

That being said, I don't like people who completely write Mario off or make him into some kind of jerkoff. I think that I have a weird headcanon for them based off of Donkey Kong and the movie where he actually has a girlfriend in the "real world" and views Peach as more of a good friend and sister.

Oh God I remember the "real world." That proves how fucking old I am, doesn't it?

I love RPG!Bowser/Peach, but my god is it hard to find any decent fic that lets him remain the hilarious jerk he is instead of turning him into a giant sap.

(Actually, I wouldn't even mind him as a giant sap in the privacy of his own head and journal as long as the author had a good Bowser-voice going on in their writing, but around other people he has a reputation to maintain!)
