I don't think there could be any argument against the fact that Jesus and Mary Magdalene (who was a learned lady *and* an important apostle *and* writer of her own gospel, NOT a 'fallen woman') loved one another deeply, even passionately.

Were they as man and wife? Lovers in body as well as soul? Maybe, maybe not. But the Christ doesn't show His Risen Self first to just anyone, you know. That's a love that transcends the ordinary, as well it should. I also believe that it's all good. ;)

I strongly believe there is a chance they were married and I consider that union part of my own somewhat eclectric faith. And no, I'm not being sucked in by the books and movies about it - I was into the idea and the history behind it long before that stuff. Don't feel bad about it, anon. Do some research and decide what YOU believe.

Lapsed Catholic and I ship it, sorta. I like the idea of it. The Last Temptation Of Christ is one of my favorite films (and Willem Dafoe is my favorite Jesus =p).
And even though I believe modern scholars over the church and that she was not a prostitute, I like the idea that she was because of what it does for the story. I mean, you take this guy, he's the highest of the high, King of Kings, God Incarnate and all that - and then you have her, and she's the lowest of the low. He loves all humanity, and all humanity looks down on her. And yet, out of all of them, she's the only one who actually gets him. I like that.

149) People have shipped that for centuries, OP. Quite possibly with reason.

[identity profile] riaki.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Nikos Kazantzakis(The last temptation of Christ) shipped them too OP. And I am sure there are more works in literature or otherwise that do.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I love all the Christianity!Secrets.
I find it VERY ironic, however, that Christianity manages to have a fandom outside of...well...Christianity. Oh internet.
PS- I always sort of thought they were together/shipped it when I was a little and still do now.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No kind of love sends people to hell, OP.

Even as far as perceived sin goes, they could've either not had premarital sex or gotten married somewhere along the way. For all that the church used to argue so hard that Jesus was both truly God and truly human, it's annoying how much they tend to dehumanize him.

I think this secret was written by time-traveling Dan Brown.

Can we please stop this nasty "... I'm going to hell" bullshit? I get that it's probably to make it all ~dramatic~ or whatnot but it really is rather horrible.

Also, this secret is only about one step better than the Achilles/Patroclus one a while ago. At least this pairing occasionally causes a bit of controversy still.

Silly OP, of course he loved her! But I guess it all depends on what you mean by 'love'. Also, I'm a little confused as to why you would think Jesus needs to be in a romantic love relationship in order to not be against romantic love.

Also, what's with the "I'm going to Hell for shipping Jesus and Mary" idea? What gives you that idea?

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally ship it.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
For what it is worth, my mother who is a pastor believes that it probably could have happened. It would have been a little odd for him not to be married in that day and age, anyway.

(I never quote the captcha, but it just said shepherd and, kind of fitting).

[identity profile] prettyshiny.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Former evangelical Christian now studying Buddhism and I've always shipped it. I feel as though Jesus would have needed that sort of honest, human love to keep him connected to the people he was working with. (Take that for its theological worth, I suppose)

And you won't go to Hell for having faith in love and companionship, I promise.

You need to get yourself some Gnostic gospels, OP. According to the Church they're fanon not canon, but they will give you your Jesus/Mary fix and plenty more to ponder.

If you're into it from a historical and not just the early-church revision stuff? It would have been very, very, VERY odd for a 30-something Jewish man to be unmarried at that point in time. Indeed, at any point until fairly recently. Judaism is built around the home and family life. The early church did a lot of fancy footwork, trying to mold him into something he didn't necessarily present himself as; I believe very much in Jesus as a Jew with radical ideas, who lived his life according to halacha at the time. Which would in all likelyhood have included marriage. Mary Magdalene is the only woman we see with a special connection to him, so I'd say she was as likely to be his wife as not.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-27 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think they were actually married, so. You aren't alone.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I ship it too.

[identity profile] bibliophile-bee.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't actually canon? I asked my mum if Jesus had a girlfriend when I was quite young and she said "Yes, Mary Magdalene." I mean, we are admittedly very far from a religious family, but still, my mom was teaching me her ships...
