I think it's very jarring and amateurish to try it. General rule of thumb is that a fanfic should have the same amount of swearing as the source material. I think some writers do it to be edgy and gritty, but it just comes off as amateurish. That being said, if you're careful and precise with the f-bomb, it can be used for very dramatic effect.

You said what I tried to say, but more eloquently. A+.

Um, not sure I can get behind that. A lot of source material cuts out the profanities because of the audience - pre-watershed TV shows, books about young adults that're aimed at the 12ish age ranges, etc. As such, it could be in character for someone to be more foul-mouthed than they're portrayed.

Ditto on the amateurish thing, though.

This. I know in Harry Potter, it's mentioned how both Harry and Ron will swear, but the word itself is never said do mostly because of the intended audience. However, the action is still there; it would have been hard for me to believe boys of their age never would.

So, if I were to write a fic with said characters, what's stopping me from actually having them swear instead of writing, "Harry swore loudly..."?

This.

Yeah, I think that's generally true except for American network TV and YA novels and animated shows which all artificially keep the swearing down—think of how free BSG was because they made up their own word. People bitch about swearing in HP fics but Ron swears in the books.

That said, when I see people swearing in weird ways I always figure the writer is rather young.

Eh, I sometimes assume toned-downness in canon - to be more specific, the first few instalments of my fandom's canon (Metal Gear) did not include any hard swearing but some characters used softer swearwords (damn, hell etc) a lot, and later instalments have been more liberal about hard swearing. So I mentally edit in harder swearwords.

True, but that actually just made the hard swearing in MGS4 much more effective and noticeable when they used it, because they still did so sparingly. It wasn't like "Cool, we can say shit and fuck now! Let's turn this franchise into a Tarantino flick, baby!" It was more like "Now that we can swear, let's save it for when we really need to."
