[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's very jarring and amateurish to try it. General rule of thumb is that a fanfic should have the same amount of swearing as the source material. I think some writers do it to be edgy and gritty, but it just comes off as amateurish. That being said, if you're careful and precise with the f-bomb, it can be used for very dramatic effect.

Unless we're talking about something like Care Bears fanfic, I don't think I would even notice that. I use "fucking" in place of "um" in everyday conversation, so.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the occasional use of the word "fuck" depending on the fandom/characters (I mean, I know I do it in my own writing sometimes), but yeah, I basically agree with you, anon.

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What about when constant swearing is in character? We're not all in public television and children's book fandoms, sweetie. Some of us watch ~rated R~ movies.

Also. "Learn to fucking write." LOL, hypocrite.

I agree to an extent, but it's not enough to really bother me unless it's OOC. When excessive swearing is in character, I don't mind at all.

[identity profile] snowdarkred.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost all of my fandoms are about

- military and mercenaries
- law enforcement of various kinds
- college kids, aka YOUNG PEOPLE
- thieves/hookers/dregs of society
- vampires/werewolves/etc

Um. These types of jobs/people? Lots of swearing in RL. (Well, aside from the vampires and werewolves. We can only assume about them.) So it can be argued that they're just going for realism, depending.

So, unless a character swearing is OOC - beyond just being restricted by the FCC - than it doesn't fucking bother me.

I tend to think that how much and how a character swears should be about characterization, one way or the other. To say they could use more "colorful" language? Well, not every character uses curse words creatively.

Whatever, as long as it's IC, I don't see a problem. If it's not, that's its own problem.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
ita

i've read fic where there are fifteen fucks in one paragraph. even if there's a lot of swearing in the source material, surely you can be more creative with what kind of word it is?

to me, this is as annoying as typed-out accents

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
whereas "fag" and "pussy" are the heights of imaginative language

go fuck yourself, shithead.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
But most of those examples are from dialogue. So the question you should be asking yourself is "does the character swear like this?". If no, then the author is writing them OOC. Is yes, you have nothing to complain about.

Because, as has been address, certain people from certain demographics and professions really do talk like that. And getting on the author's case for writing realistically makes you a dink.

[identity profile] pcthirtyone.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
While I can appreciate some cursing in a fic, it's a complete turn off when a character (who is not canonly that potty mouthed) is spouting off enough curse words to make those fellows from Insane Clown Posse blush.

[identity profile] chambergambit.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I see know problem with using swears in dialogue. People don't really talk in flowery, intricate prose, now do they? Obviously, there are exceptions, but still.

It's definitely possible to go overboard. Like everyone has said if it's appropriate to the way the character really speaks, then it should be there to capture authenticity and realism. It's also important to remember that people curse during heightened emotional moments like: anger(obviously), fear, joking around, lust...etc.
But it should be regulated, toned up or down for it to have the most powerful effect.
