Not every self insert is a Mary Sue.

A character can have your name, look like you, be friends or even be in love with canon characters you like and still be a realistic, not over the top character with ridiculous powers. They can have real problems, faults and they can make mistakes like any other not Mary Sue character.

Really.

Not every (or even most of the) time, sure, but still, it is possible.

And Ayngelle really is a very stupid name, I completely agree with that.

OP

'She has 50 guitars, all different but Ayngelle and Dekoda gave them to her without the cost, she has a voice like an angel and she just has to sing to make someone love her because they love the wonderful hypnotic properties of her voice. She can play every instrument, except the weird ones, like tuba and stuff. She looks exactly like p!nk except prettier'.
That's a mashup of some of the descriptions she has given me. When asked if she has any flaws, she replied, 'why would she have them?'

Yeah that sounds pretty Mary Sue-ish to me, granted I would have to read the whole story to be sure but after reading that I'm pretty sure I don't want to.

Re: OP

spoken like a true nonmusician.

If you can play one brass instrument, you can play any of them. The only thing that changes is what key they're in. (And how much air you need, and little adjustments of armature and whatnot, but the basic concept is the same across all brass instruments.) If she can play trumpet then odds are this fancy mary-sue would also be able to play tuba.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Dekoda...does she decode anything? :D

Self-inserts don't equal Mary sues though. :D I self-insert myself into everything I create. That shopkeeper girl in the picture handing the stuff to the heroes? That's me. The girl sitting on the bench watching ducks while the heroes fly by? That's me too. :D

But from your description it's the bad kind of a self-insert.

OP, you better hope that anons don't google those names, find your friend, and tell/troll her.

I agree that those're terrible names though.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, tell this guy his name is terrible. (http://www.seminoles.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/watson_dekoda00.html)

I just wanted to see what the stories were like and it doesn't come up in google, but both names did independently for many different things.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Fun fact: Ayngelle started as 'Angel' and was sort of a promoted groupie for Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romace and Panic at the Disco. Then she evolved in to Ayngel, Ayngell then finally Ayngelle, the friend stopped writing about bandom and instead moved her OCs into a dream house and wrote about herself living with them. She doesn't post them online, but she shows them to her friends. It's getting to the point where she references her days out with them when she's talking to real people.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ok that's kinda scary.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, people are fucking judgemental based on how you name characters.

I mean, yeah, I get it, spelling a character's name creatively is a cheap way to make them stand out from the crowd. It's easy, requires no thought or effort, and yet leaves the writer with the feeling that they have come up with something that is cool and unique. Usually happens when a writer kinda hates their own name because it's so dreadfully bland.

But geez, despite this, there are tons of real life kids out there with unusually spelled names, and if you are going go all fucktard "what a crappy name," you are probably insulting someone who actually likes their name.

OP, I don't know if your friend writes sues or not, she probably does, but not because she gives them weirdly spelled names. In fact I dare say if she wrote a really good, well rounded character and gave it a weirdly spelled name, you'd probably be fine with it.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and that's not even touching the racial implications behind the idea that anything not a normal (read: white) name is Sueish and worthy of mockery...

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
errr, no. even if she did write great characters, a bad name would stop me from reading the whole fic. If a wonderful character named 'Charlotte' spelled her name 'Sharrlot' I could not bring myself to read a story focused on her. However, I agree that just because she has an odd name, that does not make her a mary sue. People seem to be getting the impression that I think she's a sue just because she has a weird name. I don't.
Oh, and saying that I think that Ayngelle is a shit name does not mean I am insulting anyone who likes the name. I'm saying I think it's a stupid name, not whoever likes it it stupid. I wouldn't say to a little girl called Ayngelle, 'I don't like your name,' but this is a fictional character. With no feelings. I could call her a shit-faced ugly bitch and she would remain a bunch of zeroes and ones in the author's computer.
That, however, is not true when it comes to real people, so please don't call me a fucktard. I've never even met you and I'm sure you're a cool person.

Re: OP

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically you are telling me that you will opt out of a fic based solely on the names of the characters, despite the fact that alternate spellings for names is common among actual living people. I can't honestly respect that criteria. But I do suggest you stay away from fantasy and science fiction. You probably already do.

For the future, if you want to say you hate a name, say you hate a name: That makes it personal to you. If you say something is a shit name you are not only using a swear world in conjunction with someone's name, but you are implying that the name is just awful and everyone should think so. And if someone who happens to have that name hears you, you will have just told them their mother has shitty tastes in naming.

The whole notion that a name can be fine in real life but not in fiction just doesn't fly. It's not a "get out of insulting real people" card. It's totally absurd.

One last note, I know you don't mean it, but you are also skirting perilously close to being misinterpreted as a racist, because alternate name spelling is extremely common and highly regarded among some ethnic groups. So saying the practice is stupid is coming close to insulting an entire culture.

If you went into a fandom to find acceptance and not to be into that fandom, you were doing it wrong.

Just sayin'.

Still laughing at Ayngelle

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
in b4 "admitting to the existence of Mary Sues is misogyny"

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ayngelle" doesn't even really look like it sounds like "angel." :/

Echoing others though, not all self-inserts are Sues.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I know someone just like this. Awkwaaaard.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Totally fine with Mary Sue and self-insert fic, agree those names are stupid.
