Man, people are fucking judgemental based on how you name characters.

I mean, yeah, I get it, spelling a character's name creatively is a cheap way to make them stand out from the crowd. It's easy, requires no thought or effort, and yet leaves the writer with the feeling that they have come up with something that is cool and unique. Usually happens when a writer kinda hates their own name because it's so dreadfully bland.

But geez, despite this, there are tons of real life kids out there with unusually spelled names, and if you are going go all fucktard "what a crappy name," you are probably insulting someone who actually likes their name.

OP, I don't know if your friend writes sues or not, she probably does, but not because she gives them weirdly spelled names. In fact I dare say if she wrote a really good, well rounded character and gave it a weirdly spelled name, you'd probably be fine with it.

Yeah, and that's not even touching the racial implications behind the idea that anything not a normal (read: white) name is Sueish and worthy of mockery...

OP

errr, no. even if she did write great characters, a bad name would stop me from reading the whole fic. If a wonderful character named 'Charlotte' spelled her name 'Sharrlot' I could not bring myself to read a story focused on her. However, I agree that just because she has an odd name, that does not make her a mary sue. People seem to be getting the impression that I think she's a sue just because she has a weird name. I don't.
Oh, and saying that I think that Ayngelle is a shit name does not mean I am insulting anyone who likes the name. I'm saying I think it's a stupid name, not whoever likes it it stupid. I wouldn't say to a little girl called Ayngelle, 'I don't like your name,' but this is a fictional character. With no feelings. I could call her a shit-faced ugly bitch and she would remain a bunch of zeroes and ones in the author's computer.
That, however, is not true when it comes to real people, so please don't call me a fucktard. I've never even met you and I'm sure you're a cool person.

So basically you are telling me that you will opt out of a fic based solely on the names of the characters, despite the fact that alternate spellings for names is common among actual living people. I can't honestly respect that criteria. But I do suggest you stay away from fantasy and science fiction. You probably already do.

For the future, if you want to say you hate a name, say you hate a name: That makes it personal to you. If you say something is a shit name you are not only using a swear world in conjunction with someone's name, but you are implying that the name is just awful and everyone should think so. And if someone who happens to have that name hears you, you will have just told them their mother has shitty tastes in naming.

The whole notion that a name can be fine in real life but not in fiction just doesn't fly. It's not a "get out of insulting real people" card. It's totally absurd.

One last note, I know you don't mean it, but you are also skirting perilously close to being misinterpreted as a racist, because alternate name spelling is extremely common and highly regarded among some ethnic groups. So saying the practice is stupid is coming close to insulting an entire culture.
