That's because fandom isn't actually that accepting. Also, there's IRL liberal, and then there's internet liberal. The latter is way more radical and confrontational than the former.

[identity profile] jukebox-hero.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's definitely true. It's funny how intolerant, disrespectful, and unaccepting some "tolerant" fandom people truly are. Some people are really nasty under their "accepting" exterior.

It's funny how intolerant disrespectful and rude people can become when they have the anonymity of the internet to protect them

Not just anonymity - the fact that, even when you're logged in, someone can't backhand you for being a spiteful jerk.

[identity profile] xshotofclarityx.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd still call that anonymity. I mean, back in the day when IP addresses actually refered to ONE computer, as opposed to whole servers that may be in another state, it might have been legit enough to call someone out, but nowadays, an sn is just that. A few letters on a screen that could be anybody, anywhere.

Well, true, but unless someone wants to change usernames (and some people do...), things can follow you a bit. Especially with Notes and whatnot. Not that I'm saying there isn't a degree of anonymity. There certainly is. All someone has to do is rename and not have the names linked (like I did to get away from people I knew offline causing drama for me...), or create another journal.

Also the fakeness. THe old internet adage - NO ONE ON THE INTERNET IS REAL

Internet Liberal (and real life liberal) here

[identity profile] miss-mishi.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes internet liberals are fucking tired of being required to be "accepting" of every douchenozzle with an opinion and access to wikipedia. Just because you have an opinion doesn't make it a get out of an intellectual smackdown free card. I don't accept the opinions of assholes who want control over my bodily autonomy, for example. I'm intolerant, disrespectful, and unaccepting of anti-choicers. Just because we're liberal doesn't mean we're "tolerant" of asshattery. And I don't speak for all internet liberals, but the ones who are my close friends, we may want the world to be a better place and work towards it every day but part of that is being a bitch towards people who are bigoted jackholes in the hopes that it might one day wake them up.

It worked for me.

(sorry my computer's fucking up and pressed enter accidentally)

Oh, I certainly agree that bigotry and the like shouldn't be tolerated. I should have clarified more in my post, but I just came out of a huge drama-laden situation where a bunch of people blew up and bitched me out over my opinion of a movie. I mean, now I can't even talk about movies, books, or tv shows without worrying that I'm gonna trigger the next world war? That's the kind of drama I'm talking about - the petty stuff - not bigotry, sexism, and real social problems. I'm all for eliminating those, as well.

/is intolerant, disrespectful, and unaccepting of anti-choicers, too

Because media exists in a vacuum and does not at all reflect or perpetuate or creates societal norms.

Have fun trying to control what people can and can't watch.

I agree with this anon.

There are also ways to like a movie and be aware of its unfortunate implications or racism, sexism, whatever, like it despite those implications, understand something terribly offensive in some ways can be beautiful and illuminating in others, etc
