I'm surprised that people are doubting this secret. The OP can be liberal and all those other things, but if the OP even said they were from the South anywhere I bet those stereotypes followed them. I know I've stupidly made that judgment more than once.

BTW, if anyone is international, the American South has some of the stereotypes that America in general stereotypes, the American South is the stereotypical America of America. Wow that didn't make sense.

I know what you mean. I'm Polish and I often get shat on because of that in fandom. The best thing is, whenever I try to speak up about it and defend me/my country, everybody goes 'oh them butthurt poles lol'. I'm yet to meet somebody who would call out this sort of behaviour.

I'm from the crazy part of the Bible Belt, and no one, upon hearing where I'm from, assumes that I'm a right-wing nut. Sounds like you're so entrenched in a misogynistic, racist, bigoted culture that you don't realize certain things are Not OK. It's perfectly possible to be gay, for example, and homophobic. Internalized homophobia/misogyny/racism/psychophobia - it exists.

I'm sorry you've had such a nasty experience with fandom, OP. People like having easy targets to direct their anger towards, and it's even easier to make sweeping generalizations about places and groups of people. I hope you're not burned out because fandom can be a fun place, once you learn to avoid the radicals. I promise we don't all think of the South that way — I've met so many people down there that have been utterly lovely.

Sometimes I feel I'm the only person who doesn't expect acceptance from a fandom. The only thing I expect in a fandom is that other fans and I mutually enjoy the same thing - the object of the fandom.

I expect people to be accepting (or at least open-minded) because I expect people to be good to each other and acknowledge each other as human beings, whether you are in my fandom or not doesn't factor. Unfortunately, people are sometimes jackasses. It's a painful truth (Ugh.)

I don't see how liking Dr. Who or Team Fortress or Pokemon would magically make a person who's a bigoted asshole suddenly NOT become a bigoted asshole.

Am I missing something? Was the OP talking about a specific fandom that's allegedly supposed to be accepting?

There's still some terrible shit going on down in the South (like segregated proms (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/magazine/24prom-t.html), for example), so I'll actually believe the possibility of a segregated bathroom somewhere.

I love living in the South - yay for warm weather! - but sometimes, the people are shit. :/ My old HS, for example, was a terrible, terrible place to go. Not only was what was being taught horribly censored, but there was a lot of pressure to 'not make waves' - aka, we had to threaten law suit before we could get our GSA approved. The kept giving bullshit reasons against it, including 'We don't think it'll be inclusive enough'. Really? What about the Young Christian Athletes, or whatever they're called. How are they inclusive?

I've recently moved to the south, and I'm flabbergasted at how conservative the so-called liberals are. The homosexuals are homophobic, and even some of the African-Americans don't say jack when someone is racist.

It's just really fucked up.

So you might not realize that despite how open-minded you think you are that you probably still say and think things that are slightly offensive. Can't be faulted for not realizing it yet.
