I'm from the crazy part of the Bible Belt, and no one, upon hearing where I'm from, assumes that I'm a right-wing nut. Sounds like you're so entrenched in a misogynistic, racist, bigoted culture that you don't realize certain things are Not OK. It's perfectly possible to be gay, for example, and homophobic. Internalized homophobia/misogyny/racism/psychophobia - it exists.

Reluctantly, I gotta say: this. Every summer I go to a very large con down in a Southern state (I'm from the North) and I meet fans who live in that state, who happen to be white. And they're nice people, they really are. But when the subject of race relations come up, they express these amazingly naive views, which I can best sum up as "Nothing I'm doing is offensive; I know that for a fact! I don't understand why those black people keep persisting with their completely wrong complaints that my behavior is harmful or in some sort of bad taste!" And I feel like I'm some sort of an accomplice to the fact that the problem continues because I just have to sort of nod and try to divert the conversation, but ... how the hell do you get someone to see the elephant in the room, when they've been staring directly at it for years and it's eluded them? I'm damned if I know.
