I'm curious--did people respond like this to you just because you were from the South? Because I won't say that doesn't happen. In my experience, it's seemed reasonably rare, but I have seen people immediately written off as Christian and conservative if they were both Southern and white. If that's the case, then it does suck.

On the other hand, were people actually responding to what you said? If they were responding to your actual, voiced opinions, maybe that wants a little reflection on what you said and why they may have responded like that? Even if you are gay, for example, it is possible to hold views which aren't entirely progressive toward homosexuality. I've known, for example, a lesbian who was rather adamantly against calling legal homosexual unions marriage. Because a marriage was man/woman to make a family. This was a woman who'd been with her partner for, like, almost as long as my parents have been together.

I've also known feminists--including myself--who have tripped themselves up hard with internalized misogyny. These things do happen.

All that said, it sucks that you've been judged for your weight. People in fandom are no less capable of being shallow and judgmental than anyone else.

people immediately written off as Christian and conservative

What's wrong with either of these? There's nothing objectively wrong with being Christian or conservative as long as it's not discriminatory.

My point was not that there was necessarily anything wrong with them, inheritly, so much as that people are assuming that the OP is when she has stated that she is not. People would be drawing assumptions about her based on a stereotype.

Ah, just it's a common view in fandom that if you subscribe to anything from those two philosophies you're clearly against everyone's rights and it gets old fast. Sorry if you don't subscribe to that it, just the wording made me think that it was 'okay' to write people off if they were really Conservative or Christian.

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
That wasn't my intention, but looking back at my original comment, I can see how I might have worded that sloppily. I don't think that it's alright to write some one off even if they are actually Conservative or Christian. It's just that in this context, it does rather such to catch a negative reaction for something you don't even identify with.

In either case, it's generally better to address the opinions and actions a person's actually put out there rather than assuming.
