There's still some terrible shit going on down in the South (like segregated proms (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/24/magazine/24prom-t.html), for example), so I'll actually believe the possibility of a segregated bathroom somewhere.

I love living in the South - yay for warm weather! - but sometimes, the people are shit. :/ My old HS, for example, was a terrible, terrible place to go. Not only was what was being taught horribly censored, but there was a lot of pressure to 'not make waves' - aka, we had to threaten law suit before we could get our GSA approved. The kept giving bullshit reasons against it, including 'We don't think it'll be inclusive enough'. Really? What about the Young Christian Athletes, or whatever they're called. How are they inclusive?

Slightly off-topic: when I was in high school (small town, Deep South), I read the copy of 1984 that was provided along with the textbooks. Much later, post-college, I read it again - this time, an extra copy of the version the school I teach at uses - and was shocked by how much sex was in it. I didn't remember any of that.

That's right - my old school district used a censored version of 1984. When I realized that, my head just about exploded from the irony.

BEST. ANECDOTE. EVER.

In a similar vein, my high school had us read copies of Fahrenheit 451 that someone had painstakingly gone through and put little black stickers over all of the swear words.

We were all both amused and bemused by it.

My school couldn't have a GSA because, and I quote, "It promotes teen sexuality and goes against our abstinence only sex-ed policy." However, I think we did get the Christian Athletes downgraded to a "Student Led Organization" like us (unable to advertise, unable to fundraise, unable to use the school's name) during the whole thing though. The whole thing was still bullshit though.

What do GSAs have to do with promoting teen sexuality? :\

...then again I'm not from the US, so maybe they do?

OP

They don't have anything to do with it. The school was just looking for an excuse.

Because there is no such thing as an abstinent queer? IDK, I'm just assuming that's the rationale - it seems a v.v common line of thought in the States, tbh. The GSA at my university sort of does promote sexuality? In the sense that it's very - what people in fandom would call - sex-positive. Bowls of condoms and stuff like that. But I don't remember the GSA in my HS being like that, and we didn't have an abstinence-only program so I can only assume it's prejudice. But it's not a kind of prejudice that's relegated to the South, either, I'm from New England and a lot of people thought like that - it just wasn't as institutional I think.

Normally I don't do this but captcha: to chastity

Gah, I know what you mean. I love the South and I love living there but seriously, a lot of the time we're just reinforcing those stereotypes. And I live in Georgia and every spring we always hear about some school or another tying to have segregated proms.

But then again, I also live in Atlanta, so it's not as bad as it could be. My (private Catholic) school doesn't have a GSA either because the Church is against homosexual sex (because the Church's stance on sex is that is should only ever be for procreation and you can't procreate in gay sex so therefore you should engage in it; still not okay by my views but I grudgingly concede that at least Catholics are consistent with their views). /tl;dr
