If people don't like where they grew up, they often have this misconception that people elsewhere are so much better. In my experience, everywhere, and that means every place and every subculture, has its problems and nuisances.

I grew up in Alabama. I'm also a bisexual, atheist, and way socially liberal. So I know where you're coming from here. Are the majority of southerners conservatives and Christians? Well, yeah, and they're going to assume you are too unless you say differently. But that's not what make the place unpleasant, per se. In my experience, what makes it unpleasant is a vocal minority of extremists and closed minded old people who have never (to their knowledge) met a gay person or an atheist or a liberal or whatever. The vast majority of young people are okay. They'll judge you for you, anyway. Fandom is kind of the same way. What makes it unpleasant is a few extremist idiots, most of whom don't really have the life experience to know what they're talking about.

In any case, in the South or on the internet, if someone forms their opinion of you based on based on anything other than what you say and do, they're not worth talking to, end of discussion. But that by no means signifies you should write off all of fandom. Because then aren't YOU stereotyping people?

Also, you've said what you've been judged as here, but what ARE you, actually? Because that would make this secret make a bit more sense.

Yeah, that's generally what I've concluded about fandom. It is annoying though, when going into a discussion about, say, how a female character is portrayed to instantly be told I'm not enough of a feminist to be worth listening to because I'm not an extremist. I tend to lurk for that reason.

And the way you're describing the young people of the south is true except that there is still a lot of homophobia around, and very verbally.

What am I? I'm an overweight, lesbian, whose political views were once described as "Liberal-tarian" (I actually agree with Meghan McCain on most things, and I listen to Bortz), Unitarian-Universalist Theist whose friends are all Catholic, consider myself a non-radical feminist, and white in an area with a minority-majority. I hope that'll help you with context, even if the rules of grammar did up and leave about halfway through that sentence. :)
