Haha, another otaku who thinks Japan is going to be the ~promise land~ of anime and otaku culture. I have a lot of Japanese friends (did foreign exchange in high school, and am going to school there this fall) and sorry to say, but "otaku" is considered an insult to a lot of Japanese youth. My friends were never part of the anime culture (sure, we watched it and read manga on occasion because it's what was on/most girls did, but mostly girly stuff and we didn't nerd out too much), and believe me, white people who are are shunned/made fun of pretty bad. Gaijin are treated differently anyway, and it REALLY doesn't help if you fit the nerd stereotype. I was one of the only white non-otaku the people I hung out with had ever met, so I was well-liked.

As others have said, Akiba isn't fucking anime wonderland, it's a district for shopping and tourists. Not as much anime as you'd think, though I did see some otaku tourists. I didn't really like going there, because most of the other Americans I saw were otaku doing socially awkward things, and were really fucking annoying.

So, yeah. My advice would be to not be all fandom-y. There's a possibility that you could meet some Japanese otaku and become friends (and if you're doing study abroad or something with other Americans, you'll surely meet otaku there, heh), but if you go around weeaboo'ing it up, yeah, expect to be treated worse. It' just the truth.

(sorry if that came off as harsh. I have a lot of feelings about this, since American otaku kinda give the rest of us a bad name over there -_-)

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
...that gave me all kinds of racist thoughts.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you mean "racist thoughts"? Like, racist towards Americans/white people, or towards Japanese, or thoughts that they're pretty racist over there? I didn't mean that I don't like Americans (I AM American, if you couldn't tell...), just otaku people, because they're annoying to me. That isn't racism...

Yeah, they kinda are racist. Just how it is. America is an incredibly accepting country, our country was founded on immigration. Not everywhere else is like that. It's not that they blatantly hate other cultures, they just aren't as accepting in comparison to here.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I was talking about the japanese. I won't be going there anytime soon now.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-15 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
America is an incredibly accepting country

LOL

(If you're white, yes.
As a latinoamerican I don't wanna go to USA EVER again. Thankyouverymuch.)

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't know what region you went to in the U.S., but I'm very sorry that you were treated so badly that you don't want to come here again.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seriously. I've never seen a latino really treated badly, unless you were in some part of the south that doesn't like anyone or something. :o Definitely not representative of the entire U.S.!

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm from Long Island, and we have definitely had too many cases of anti-Latino discrimination and violence. Then again, New York isn't representative of the entire country, either.

[identity profile] pyrobaby.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
I really can't blame you. :/

I dunno why people bother comparing racism in Japan and the US, because they're racist in different ways. It's probably just the white folks coming over here to Japan and being shocked that for once THEY'RE the ones getting uneasy looks on the subway, being randomly stopped by the police "because they can," and getting asked why they're so noisy in the movie theaters.

There is nothing funnier than white Americans bitching about how racist Japan is when there are PoC in the room.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Because positive discrimination is so awesome, isn't it?

(For the record, I'm not American and I don't think they are very open-minded. But being racist against white people is not right, honey. It's still racism).

[identity profile] pyrobaby.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
um, what?

I'm not saying that any kind of discrimination is right. I'm saying that I think it is hilarious that many of the same people who will go LOL WHITE GUILT when you try to have a serious discussion of racism in the US are the first ones to start loudly complaining about "those racist nips" once they get to Japan, and when they do it in the presence of other, non-white American expats, the lack of self-awareness is incredible. Then they go home and start the I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE PERSECUTED FOR MY RACE bullshit, when even as minorities, white people still have it pretty sweet comparatively. Hell, white people are probably better off in Japan than most Koreans and Chinese.

Racism in a society is so connected to that society's culture and history that you can't really measure it on a "this country is more racist than this one" bar graph, although it seems like people love to do it. Make no mistake, I'm not trying to defend Japan as a magical land of tolerance, but I think a lot of times people lose their perspective talking about it.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
DA. Way to overreact, OA probably just misunderstood. Take a fucking chill pill, honey.

[identity profile] pyrobaby.livejournal.com 2010-07-17 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Writing more than 3 sentences is overreacting? You're right, they misunderstood. So I attempted to explain it again in more detail. Apparently you also have problems with understanding things?

[identity profile] pyrobaby.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, and also, I prefer being called "sugarbritches" or "pumpernickel butt" to "honey," for future reference.

[identity profile] atlikarinca.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD I FINALLY FOUND SOMEONE WHO DIDN'T LIKE AKIBA EITHER. if it's bad enough when other countrymen are being socially awkward, try your grandparents. I had to stop them from going into one of those weird ass cosplay cafes for lunch

I liked it much more for the cameras and electronics in general. The anime merch is just the same moeblob stuff over and over again.

[identity profile] itachinyu.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Let's all judge a whole country!

Have you been to Japan? It probably depends where you go, but in the times I've been, for the most part people are far more friendly and eager to help you out than in my home country and what I've heard about the US.
I fell off my bike there once and this guy at the end of the street ran up just to see if I was okay. When I was there with my family we couldnt find our train and a random businessman who was clearly in a hurry went out of his way to help us out.
There are racists in every country, just because they are in Japan as well doesnt mean you ought to say the whole country is that way. Take it from someone who's white and has actually -lived- there.

Have you been to Japan?

Sorry, but did you even read my comment?

Actually, even though the comment came off as pretty negative, I had a great experience with the Japanese people. (I was just talking in terms of how they treat non-Japanese otaku with the bad stuff). People were EXTREMELY helpful and friendly, and all the service I received was often better than in the US. I did get stared at a lot (partially because I have really light blonde hair), and guys were a little perverted sometimes, but as a whole I enjoyed it. It helps to hang out with Japanese people rather than other foreigners, just because it helped me assimilate and I think people figured that if I'm with them I must be okay. (I didn't get along with the other American exchange student, so I just had to make all Japanese friends!)

[identity profile] itachinyu.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Ah wait sorry I replied to the wrong comment. This was more directed at the people further down being all "WELL I NEVER WANT TO GO TO JAPAN EVER NOW, BUNCH OF RACISTS."

Re: lol

[identity profile] pyrobaby.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Serious question: how much Japanese do you speak? How long were you there?

The thing with Japan experiences is depending on what part of the country you're in, how long you're there doing what, and how much Japanese you can understand, the anecdotes vary a lot.

Which I guess is the same as anywhere, but Japan seems to get the worst examples of this.

Re: lol

[identity profile] itachinyu.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've been learning for 7-8 years, was there for 6 months as well as short visits to other places around the country.
My family were with me with these 'short visits' and they cant speak Japanese at all. (my sister's learning)

Re: lol

[identity profile] pyrobaby.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't really answer the question "how much do you speak?" There REALLY is a difference in how you get treated with that. :)

This isn't the case with all Japanese by far, but they tend to prefer to keep foreigners as "guests" - you get nicer treatment that way, but you're definitely on the "outside." And that seems to be how most of them prefer it.

Depressing as it can be though I still love living here for the past 6 years...

[identity profile] pyrobaby.livejournal.com 2010-07-16 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
This, so much. ANd I know what you mean about American otaku giving the rest of us a bad name. I've gotten blamed for others' stupidity way too many times to count...
