If the ending of the series had been ship-neutral (i.e., NO relationships at the ending), I would've been very happy.

I mean, they're kids, for chrissake. I'm not dating the same guy as I was when I was 14. I can't even think of any people I know, who are.

This is my issue with both the Harry Potter epilogue and the ending of Avatar. There's this air of permanence to both (complete in HP's case with "they're still happily together 20 years later) and it makes me uncomfortable because it's so rare for people to stay madly in love with their first teenage significant other.

Yeah, but then you get the people that are both mad about Harry/Ginny in the epilogue and that Luna married someone we've never met in the books. Like, what exactly do you want, fandom?

Honestly? I'd prefer that authors avoid the Happily Ever After trope in general. I can understand both points; it's frustrating to have the whole "your first lover is your only lover" cliche since that's so rarely realistic, but it's equally frustrating to have a relationship tossed at you out of nowhere.

I suppose the random relationship one annoys me more, but that's because it might be rare that a first romance is the only one, when the pairing is set up properly, it comes across as heartwarming and touching. Childhood/teenage friendships turning to True Love isn't really a trope I care much for, but I have seen it done quite well. Usagi and Mamoru from the BSSM manga is one such example, or Sophie and Howl, from Howl's Moving Castle. You see the development of their feelings for each other and it feels very believable that they really are the one for one another.

Me? I wanted Harry/Luna. :D

But I think the main problem is that the epilogue exists at all.

Man, this. It's just like... the first relationship I had lasted for like a weekend. Because I was 15 and didn't know what I wanted in a relationship.

[identity profile] misora.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
LOLOL. This was about the extent of my first stint with my first boyfriend, at age 14. I didn't know what the fuck I was even doing.

And I thought tongue-kissing was gross. Whooo boy, if I'd known then what I know now... :p

[identity profile] drandomtuba.livejournal.com 2010-07-15 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This exactly... I could see a shippy moment between the two being okay, but it should have ended with Aang suggesting some crazy fun vacation activity. Yes, he'd matured a lot throughout the show, but he's still a child who loves to have fun, and he just saved the world.

[identity profile] xlovelylightx.livejournal.com 2010-07-17 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed! Getting married at like, what, 16 or committing to a serious relationship rarely happens at that age and if it does, it usually doesn't well. Yue was forced into that kind of commitment and look at how unhappy it made her.
