Actually...you're wrong. In the pop-up edition of "The Avatar Returns", it states that Zuko was to be Katara's love interest, but they decided to change it. I don't know if it's true or not (or just teasing fans), but it aired on Nicktoons Network and I was majorly surprised.

I think the whole Kataang thing was just to fulfill the "Hero wins the girl" trope that occurs in most action and adventure stories.

You hit on the head why I ship Zutara, but it is my understanding that perhaps some people came into it beforehand thinking that Zutara might eventually become canon? I dunno, I wasn't there in the beginning. :)

tbh, I would have preferred they never touched on the romantic aspect and just kept them as friends, not choosing one side or the other in the "war".

Meh, I watched the whole series in one go and shipping was the last thing I thought about. I thought all the "canon" ones were kind of flat but I really liked Sokka/Suki. I lol at the ship wars...I'll just stick to...Jetko..And stuff...

That's actually one of the problems I have with it. It seems like Bryke thought Kataang was perfectly developed and perfect and wonderful and flawless, when it really... wasn't. I'm not saying Zutara was better (in fact, I'm quite happy with it not being, since it's so much more fun in fanon) but Kataang was terribly-developed, at least from Katara's end -- I ended up with the impression that she resigned herself to being Aang's prize for defeating Ozai and that sits all kinds of wrong with me. I wouldn't have an issue with it if it seemed like she was romantically interested in him before the last five minutes of the finale, you know?

Although, really, the romance was the worst part of the show.

fffffff dude, they're just kids ): I doubt they'd be together forever no matter which pairing you go with. It's natural that they might "date" for a while (however you date at 12), might break up, maybe get back together... Both pairings could conceivably happen! Most people don't honestly know what they want that young.

FUCKING THANK YOU. This is why I'd have loved a ship-neutral ending, all things considered. I think the one that was best done was Sukka, and even then, it wasn't stellar. Action shows should focus on action and I always thought that it would end with a scene of the whole gaang, not two of them playing tonsil-hockey. xV

As a Zutara shipper I wouldn't have approved of a sudden Zutara kiss or confession or whatever. At least I'm pretty sure it would have been too out of the blue. But a hint would have been nice if they had gone that direction and just a hint with the Kataang would have been nice too after spending all that time talking about "confusion". A kiss was a bit much.

Anyway I just thought Zutara would have made more sense and I didn't see the chemistry in Kataang. But the creators intended Kataang so I'm okay with that. It's still a great series and the romantic aspect isn't the main point.

I kind of liked Aang's idealized crush on Katara? But yeah I think they should have just left the romance and shipping to happen in fandom instead of trying to hamhand it in there they way the did.

Some of the Kataang episodes are painful to watch because I see it as totally one-sided on Aang's part, and the supposed Zutara shipping teases I just can't see it.

mostly whenever the topic of shipping comes up my response is "THESE ARE KIDS WHY DO THEY NEED ROMANCE JEGUS THEY HAVE ENOUGH CRAP ON THEIR PLATES ALREADY."

all I have to say is this:

1) They are kids. It'd be natural for them to have feelings for... at least someone in their group, since it's only natural for people to develop attachments to those who endure trials alongside them.

1a) also, romance is a plot device. whether anyone likes it or not, it's probably going to happen in an action/fantasy story/show; that's just a very common staple of the whole hero's journey archetype.

2) I do think the shipwars are fucking stupid and I couldn't care less. I kind of speculated on Zutara and Kataang--and also Katoph and Sukkatara, Sokkla, Tyzula, Jetko, Maiko, etc. Because that's what you can do with fandoms and it's fun. BFD.

3) I don't really mind the way Kataang developed. It was hammed up, yeah, but it's a kid's show. A lot of things in ATLA are/were hammed up; if you're looking for 'well-played out romances' or 'serious romance,' you're barking up the wrong tree.

3a) I felt it was a little obvious Katara had some feelings for Aang? at least, that's how I saw it was played out, especially on Kyoshi Island. I could outline more instances but I'm pretty sure that'd be flogging a dead horse, and I think you guys see my point.

tl;dr, I just wanna sit back, have my cake and eat it too, and even when I'm sitting back in my dry and dusty world of academia as I slowly work my way into school debt, I'll look fondly on ATLA and just remember that in it and shows like it, there's only as much bullshit in its context as I'll go digging for.

I just watched Avatar after getting curious because of the movie, so I never was in the fandom and never saw any of the shipping wank or whatever, but I think I agree with this. Or maybe it's just that whether he saved the world or not, I have trouble not being creeped out by a 12 year old getting the girl. I thought his crush on Katara was cute, but the end was kinda "meh" to me when they got together. Wasn't big on Mai and Zuko reuniting either, just felt like it would make more sense for his character to move on. *shrug*

Sokka and Suki, on the other hand, were awesome.<3

Yeaaaaaah, for Zuko/Katara to work they would need another season. Their development from enemies to friends went smoothly but it would have been too soon to make it anything more without making it seem a little odd.

Kataang could have been done better. All I'm going to say.
