(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)You felt it appropriate to drag an artist who took some of the 20th century's most remarkable photographs into your complaint against this year's banal gross-out horror film. Well done.
Given your use of quotes ("art"), I really doubt you're familiar with Mapplethorpe's gritty, elegant body of work as a whole, his driving obsessions, the personal agendas present in his work, or his skill with a camera.
Perhaps you're thinking of some other crocked-up OH NO CHALLENGING ART IS CHALLENGING controversy from the 90's. Try again.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)Anon is also unbelievably delighted to be discussing Mapplethorpe in a fandomsecrets thread. :D

It's pretty difficult to figure out where the line is between an artist being edgy and an artist wanting to screw with your head.
IE, the Punch-You-In-The-Face-Tunnel could be seen as an exercise in psychology-who would want to do something if they have been very up-front about the fact that at the end they will get punched in the face? Nobody forced them into it but in the end three people went in and the only reason nobody else did was because the artist ended up breaking the last's nose.
The artists new installation is the Rape Tunnel, which may be pushing things a bit far.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)Anon read a few lines from the director that made it sound like he usually does more "artsy" films, and was in part trying to push the limits of the genre. Which does not excuse the other two-thirds of the film: sick joke and torture-fetish-porn.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-16 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)I was not, actually, referring to Marplethorpe's artwork, nor trying to compare it to banal horror movies. I actually don't know if I've seen any of Marplethorpe's work or not. What I was referring to was the kind of controversy he stirred up in that particular museum exhibition funded by National Endowment for the Arts, which became one of the only times in American judicial history when the subject of "what is art" was addressed by the Supreme Court. Was it the Supreme Court? A SRS-BSNS court, at least.
Artistic merit aside (and I do assume that Marplethorpe's work has great artistic merit), the exhibition clearly was meant to push the boundaries of what was considered "art". I thought about saying "that guy who exhibited the toilet with a label that said 'Fountain, ceramic'" but that doesn't have the same erudite ring as "Marplethorpe-like".
