In addition to what everyone else above has said, how does physical appearance matter over a computer? In my experience in fandom, the most noteable people in fandom are the ones that are the most active, most friendly, have a good sense of humor, are a talented writer or artist, or are really good at keeping people up to date with fandom news. I don't know what most people in fandom look like, besides some of my friend's list and it sure doesn't factor into their relationships online.
