Ignore that, OP. WRITE WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW! Explore it. Wallow in it. If you fail, so what? Dust yourself off and try again. Don't listen to anyone who wants to control your creativity from the back seat.

No, it's writing. You learn the same way as in any other type of art. You try and then try again and again and again. You're an artist, you should know that. Sure research is important, but saying not to write without that when some people just want to have fun is ridiculous. Or do you find refferences for every doodle you do? Do you spend hours preparing poses for a sketch? Dooon't think so.
