Agree, and in b4 "educate yourself"

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Because OMG it's not our job to educate youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

It won't be long -- or has it happened already? -- that "problematic" will become shorthand for "shit I don't like in your story" and will be used as an excuse to get writers to stop writing in a way you don't like. It's begun already with claims that one character bottoming too often in slash fic is "PROBLEMATIC," omg time for the crusade.

It isn't POC's obligation to educate you.

That being said, I wouldn't mind fielding some questions, and I'm suer there are others who wouldn't either.

Unfortuatenly, I can see a comm like that turning into trollbait pretty much immediately.

There are quite a few resources out there. [profile] racism101, though I don't know how useful that is. [personal profile] sparkymonster collected a bunch of links here: http://delicious.com/starkeymonster/forcluelesswhitepeople.

Making a community might not be a bad idea. It's unreasonable to ask a random POC to evaluate your story, since they have other shit going on in their lives. But I don't see anything wrong with having a community dedicated to just that purpose, where POC could participate on a purely voluntary basis.

I don't know that a comm like little details would be the solve, but maybe a list of resources? Or maybe something more like a beta community? When the Racebending challenge was hosted on DW, there was a beta post. So that can be part of the solve, but not the entire solve.

I'm hesitant because the reason that people say "it's not my job to educate you" is that a comm might rely on [insert non-privileged group here] to rubberstamp fics. Avoiding fail is everyone's responsibility.

Also, fic writers spend tons of time researching canon, or the cities they want to set their fic in, or the kind of gun someone would use. I'm not sure why they can't research these kinds of issues as well, or why saying, "here are some links, have a good time" is such a threatening and horrible thing to say to a writer.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
shaking my head at the butthurt anons upthread... [livejournal.com profile] racism_101 is the community most relevant to your interests.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a good idea.

[identity profile] saramiskismet.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like going to an online location where you can receive feedback is "educating yourself", or at least making the effort to gain information about what your specific thoughts/writings imply.

Reading articles isn't the only way education can happen, and while no one has an obligation to take you under their wing and teach you things, if a community of people willing to share ideas exists, I don't see the problem. Demanding it from anyone, or implying it's their job to baby you, isn't the same thing as what's proposed I think. It would be a good idea for anyone interested in writing characters in groups they're not members of to do some individual research before requesting feedback from anyone.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Because posts asking if little details in someone's writing can be construed in some way as racist/otherwise offensive are going to inevitably result in overanalyzation. Context is everything.

And a comm with a "Let me know if I'm being subconciously racist!" theme is going to inevitably attract lots of white people who are overeager to show off their misconstrued concept of privelege they learned from LJ that you can't possibly trust to truthfully tell you how you're coming across.

[identity profile] mewsrissicat.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for trying, OP. It's freaking hard to know where to start and educating yourself takes time, but is so worthwhile.

Go to racefail and wiki, and don't get bogged down in the wank. Sort through it, and you'll find authors of all cultures who are not only critical, but genuinely helpful.

Here's a start. http://deepad.dreamwidth.org/29598.html

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
This reminds me that I had been thinking of making a comm about things that are probably not directly offensive, but, like, tired old clichés that you should avoid when writing about a specific culture.

But the problem is that only people who belong to one specific group can really tell you what pisses them off, what offends them, what they're sick of, and there's no easy rule that applies to everything and that, once learned, helps you avoid any and all mistakes.

But I am sure it could be a challenge to find specifically, say, a Korean-American adoptee raised in Chicago in the 1990's, if that's what your story needs. :(

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you have good intentions, I'll give you that. But I don't know if that's an effective solution.

There's no one "right" way to write PoCs, same as characters in general. Give all your characters dimension, and that's a good place to start.
xenoglossy: (There She Is // now I ded from heartmark)

[personal profile] xenoglossy 2010-07-18 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a nice idea, I think, but in practice I suspect it would go down horrendously in flames.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That thing would go down like a flaming oil tanker. Seriously. Can you imagine the wank it would generate?

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe it's just time to admit that fanfic is a hobby that doesn't fucking matter.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Call me cynical, but that comm will never exist because half the fun for a lot of people is joining the Outrage Brigade. Raging out over today's designated wicked awful person is a pan-fandom pastime; all societies love punishing bad people even if they have to create them. The ones like that are seriously drowning out the ones who genuinely want to prevent harm and make the world a better place.

Being outraged and upset is easy and comes with lots of emotional support and social connection. Piledriving the guilty is fun sport and stokes up feelings of power, righteousness, and bonding friendship. Both give a feeling of catharsis.

Actually helping someone you don't know and don't care about is tough work, frustrating, dryly intellectual, and often unrewarding.

So it's unsurprising that people come together after the fact to punish, but scatter the moment someone actually asks for help.
