I want a comm like that to exist SO BADLY. I want to start writing characters of color, but I want to do it in confidence. And as the situation stands now, I don't really have a lot of it because I can't find anyone willing to help out. Hate to admit it, but there are a LOT of times where I have to practically be smacked over the head to fully grasp why something is offensive (the Noble Savage trope, for example, never crossed my mind as bad until it was pointed out in the context of Dances in Fern Gully), so I'd love to have someone smack correct me before I release something to the public that's wrong on more levels than I realize.

It's funny, but the most blatant, in-your-face example of the Noble Savage trope I've ever seen was in a movie called Next of Kin, with Liam Neeson and Patrick Swayze, and they weren't PoC. It was the scene where Patrick's city wife comes back with him to the rural South where she's asked to play the "fiddle" and plays Ave Maria for the illiterate hillbillies. The violin notes soar over the green valleys and everyone looks up (in their overalls) wide-eyed and wondering and slack jawed. One whiskered redneck looked like he was sniffing the air in awe.

Because you know, Southerners don't have fucking radios.

I never saw that movie, so I wouldn't have known about it. Even then, knowing my dumbassery, I probably wouldn't have gotten farther than an "are you fucking serious?" instead of connecting it to the noble savage trope. /is obtuse
