Call me cynical, but that comm will never exist because half the fun for a lot of people is joining the Outrage Brigade. Raging out over today's designated wicked awful person is a pan-fandom pastime; all societies love punishing bad people even if they have to create them. The ones like that are seriously drowning out the ones who genuinely want to prevent harm and make the world a better place.

+1

Yeah. But too many of them believe they're so righteous in what they do...it's sad realy.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't you doing the exact same thing? Instead of turning *ist writers into boogeymen, you're turning the people who object about it into a torch-wielding mob.

The fact is that most discussions of racism in fandom act just like every other discussion in fandom: people read a post, and either comment, or post something related in their own LJ. I can understand how this would be overwhelming in aggregate, but people are not actively trying to hurt or shame anyone. They're just talking because people in fandom love to talk.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Naah, they just like to feel superior over someone.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
No more so than the people complaining about what evil bitches the anti-*ism brigade are. Have you read the first part of this thread? It's full of self-righteousness.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone likes to feel superior over someone. Especially on the internet where the inferiority complex is so common.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
And you're complaining about what an evil bitch OP is for complaining about the *ism brigade. And I'm complaining about you. IT GOES ON FOREVER

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What, no, at no point did I say "evil bitches" because honestly I hate that word. I'm just saying there are some suspect motives going on.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't referencing you specifically - just an overall sentiment I've seen in fandom. Sorry if I was unclear.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps if people would talk to each other, rather than to overall sentiments, we'd be able to get somewhere.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The person I was replying to was also speaking generally.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
but people are not actively trying to hurt or shame anyone

Really gotta disagree on that. Of course reasonable discussions exist and of course there are things which deserve to be brought up, but I'm afraid torch-wielding mob is really not that far from the truth for a good chunk of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's a difference between someone commenting on a subject because everyone on their flist has posted about it and they want to get in on it, and deliberately going out to attack someone. Especially since, in my experience, these posts usually focus on broad trends, not individuals. I'll use the J2 Haiti wank, since someone kept a running collection of posts related to it. The vast majority would mention the writer of the story only in passing. A substantial number wouldn't mention her at all. It's definitely a bandwagon, but since there's no real desire to attack the original failer, it's not a lynch mob.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I really can't tell if you're trolling right now; lol using "lynch mob" in the context of isms, wow.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I used it because I've seen it used regularly in these discussions. That doesn't make it right, of course. I'm sorry, I should've chosen another, less offensive word.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
what the fuck

someone on F!S actually apologized for offensive behavior

is this like

fucking bizarro world or something

oh god my mind

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does it have to be either or? Can't the *ist people be boogiemen b and the bulk of the people protesting be a torch-wielding mob.

Maybe some of the protesters aren't actively trying to hurt or shame, but quite a vocal lot of them are. And actually the same could be said of the *ists. Sure there are some trolls, but many don't even realize what they've done is hurtful and wrote what they did in all innocence.

It also makes people feel a lot better about their own prejudice (whether it be subconscious or not). These are the same people who pat themselves on the back for arbitrarily inserting POC into their writing or whenever they make friends with a POC, because it makes them feel good or enlightened*. Similarly, calling people out on their privilege and racism prejudice makes them feel good. (Assuming they're white that is.)

We so very much need a List of those belonging to the Outrage Brigade. How sad is it that I can think of ten names right off the top of my head?
