I don't interact with the fandom but I have a few friends from it and I've lurked it a few times, and really, it's not that bad. There are crazies and people you won't get along with, but it's really no worse then any other fandom.

It gets a bad wrap but I assure you there are plenty of nice people who like Supernatural. Plus it is worth at least lurking around Supernatural for the GIF parties.

It's a HUGE fandom. It's easy to meet people of similar mindsets. There are a lot of people who hate Wincest. There are a lot of people who hate how fandom/canon treats female characters.

Also, OP, there is some buzz that Gabriel might be coming back, so don't worry about that. (The only time they've permakilled a really popular character is Sir, and then that was probably more of a function of JDM's schedule than of anything else.)

OP, this fandom is ENORMOUS. There are plenty of places to hang out if you don't like Wincest (I don't). Not everybody is scary; I actually haven't run into that many scary people because the places I hang out are awesome. I have tons of SPN friends from all sides of the shipping spectrum, from 'cesters, to D/C folks, to ~Sassy, to Mishawives, to gen. I am a multi-shipper, myself, and the female characters are some of my favorites on the show. Tons of people LOVE Gabriel and lots of them think it's inevitable he'll come back. If you want a good place to start out without wank and "scary" people, try ontd_spnparty. It's fun.

Seriously, every fandom has its crazies. Just don't go to comms about pairings you don't like, and you'll be fine. /: Everyone I've met that likes Supernatural has been fair about "ship and let ship", but again, I avoid the crazies.

There isn't anything to be afraid of in the SPN fandom. There are SO MANY FUCKING COMMUNITIES it's not even funny, and tons have no Wincest in them either. Like everyone else said, check out ontd_spnparty and spnnewsletter is great for all kinds of references to fics, art, articles etc..

I just joined the fandom myself about two months ago, and I haven't had a bad experience yet! :D

It's not all slash--and I say this as someone who ships Sam/Dean liek whoaz.

There are gen communities, and I remember awhile ago that there was a friending meme (don't remember where, sorry) for fans who didn't like slashing.

If you want to try getting into fandom, I'd say follow the Supernatural gen fic community and just scroll past anything that says slash. If lurking doesn't do it for you, at least you tried. =D

There are plenty of people who like gen and het and female characters. If there's any dearth of them, it's because of whiny passive aggressiveness like this.

Besides, the craziest people in fandom aren't going to go after you at all. It's all infighting with them. Wincesters and Dean/Cas 'shippers will be too busy going after each other to care about the people having fun with their gen and their Dean/Jo or whatever.

Dude, trust me. I actually didn't watch this show for the first four years because I was so scared of the fandom, and it was a MISTAKE.
