I love Miyazaki's movies because they're entertaining and high quality, but the thing that matters to me is the fact that they have a decent amount of female characters. Female main characters that aren't always princesses, to boot.

I agree, the abundance of interesting/well-developed/non-stereotypical female characters is one of the biggest merits of Studio Ghibli's movies, imo. That and I think the animation is gorgeous and the music awesome.

IA! I love his strong female characters :D

Prominent female Disney/Pixar characters who are not princesses: Esmeralda, Megara, Jane, Alice, Wendy, Lilo, Mulan, Lady, Marie, Jessie, Ellie, Colette, and more.

Except only a few of those are not love interests, and almost none are protagonists. Don't get me wrong, I love Disney/Pixar, but strong female characters are not the top thing I love them for.

Well, actually, it is for Pixar, but Pixar's never had a female protagonist. I've heard there's a movie with one waiting in the wings though so I'm pretty excited about that. \o/

I can't wait for that movie!
I was highly disappointed that "A bug's life" actually featured a male protagonist that was an ANT, while the ant "princess" and queen should have been running the show. Instead the "princess" was a stupid damsel in distress/love interest and the queen was downplayed. Also most of the entire cast was male.
A lot of those animated insect movies did that. Ignoring a good chance to have a strong female lead because of the laws of nature and try to squeeze in as many male characters as possible. Because we all know boys can't relate to a female. Yes, us menfolk is probably too stupid to relate to a woman.

This new Disney movie comes to mind, which should be about Rapunzel. But they made it about some thief and named the movie "Tangled", because they feared boys wouldn't like to see a movie that was named after a female character.

I'm really tired of the boring female secondary characters.
And I figure many girls are just as tired of the male "loser" lead who ends up with the "gorgeous girl prize".

Meg needed to be rescued by a man, as did Jane. I have no clue who Marie, Ellie and Colette are, but can almost guarantee that their main point was being a love interest.

Lilo and Mulan are alright, but most Disney females are all about finding a man and falling in love. Miyazaki's movies aren't always so predictable, which is why I like them.

And the characters in Miyazaki films seem more thought out and original than any Disney characters, not to mention the intricate and interesting plots.

But as another Anon said further up, it's really not a good comparison as the two - Disney and Miyazaki - are basically only similar because they're animated and generally aimed at children. After that they go separate ways.

Mulan is a total badass, but it's worth noting that she's including amongst the Princess pantheon.

Prominent but not main. And this is coming from an anon who loves Pixar and Disney.

Very prominent in Pixar's case, but not quite main character status, which I hate noting (particularly since it shouldn't even be an issue to begin with). I also didn't mean to imply that Disney or Pixar was all princesses--simply that that is the most likely female character type people think of in association with animated movies (which I stated in another comment and is a bit more detailed).

I actually love all three studios and find Pixar to be the most interesting to watch right now, but even if Miyazaki isn't quite original and tends to be repetitive, I love that I can expect main female characters and not be disappointed. The upcoming Borrowers movie is a good example of a male character and female character sharing the spotlight.

Alice is actually a member of Disney's so-called Princess Club, for what that's worth. So even though she's one of the few female protagonists who's not a love interest of some other character (and I'm sure Hatter fans would argue this point, but I mean of the canon story), she's considered a "Princess" by Disney's marketing "standards."

(Anonymous) 2010-07-23 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite of Miyazaki's female protagonists is a princess, but that never stops Nausicaa from having strength, decisive leadership, intelligence, influence, willpower, or control over her own destiny.

original thread anon

(Anonymous) 2010-07-24 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. Nausicaa is one of my favorite princess characters because she seemed to have a strong influence over her fate. I was actually thinking of her and Chihiro when I made my original comment.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-23 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because a female protagonist is a princess it does not mean she is incapable of being written as strong.

And honestly I'd say Miyazaki and Disney are about even there, because both companies are male dominated and tend to write from a male perspective, we need more women behind the scenes in the animation industry to truly get a wider spectrum of female characters.

(This is not to say I believe men are incapable of writing great female characters, they can and do, there is just an overlying problem in the animation industry with the overall ideas all being very... male)

original thread anon

(Anonymous) 2010-07-24 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, a princess can be written very well. I never intended my comment in that way--one of my favorites from the Miyazaki films is Nausicaa. It's just an common quirk of animated films that main female characters are more likely to be characters that are also princesses, if that makes more sense.

Re: original thread anon

(Anonymous) 2010-07-24 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
And to add on briefly, I completely agree with your second statement about the male-oriented thinking. It's just nice to see that movies can have female protagonists and be widely seen as universal (a lot of people remember Kiki's Delivery Service without calling it a "girly" movie, for example), and that's why I love Miyazaki's films. Disney and Pixar have great female characters, but--well, look at Tangled and how Flynn-dominated the ads have been so far. It's a common issue that will hopefully be addressed as more female animators head into companies.

Oh my goodness, also this.

[identity profile] darlingpoppet.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
this is what i came in here to say! i love how outspoken and deliberate he is about being a feminist. nearly every miyazaki-directed movie since Nausicaa (i think porco rosso is the only exception) has either a female protagonist, has a female lead in top billing along with a male lead, or is the eponymous character that drives the main story. that's something even pixar hasn't managed to do, as much as i love them.

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in Porco Rosso, they did have Fio. At least, I count her as a strong girl: She's outspoken, charming, has her own mind, and goes along with her gut instinct no matter how much Porco tells her "no". Given how old-fashion he also is (and given the time period at the time), the fact that he character developed from her (and managed to respect her for both her skills and personality) is a major boost on why I love the character (and the movie in general).

[identity profile] darlingpoppet.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
oh totally, i guess i should've said that pretty much 100% of miyazaki's female characters are also strong. but i was just trying to make the point that in most of his movies, they're also the main protagonists or the driving part of the story. i just mean that porco rosso is the only one where the female is a supporting character. they're lots of really cool and awesome female characters who i love in pixar movies (jessie, dory, ellie, boo, etc.) but they're all supporting characters, or they share top billing with a male lead. miyazaki just goes to show that you can have a female lead (nausicaa, chihiro, kiki) that's relatable to everyone and doesn't necessarily make it a "girl" movie.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-24 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
This. I believe it's possible to consider Miyazaki's movies ground-breaking in this regard. Other animation studios produce movies that have many awesome female characters, but it's extremely unusual to see an animation studio that consistently makes women the primary characters (THE protagonist) rather than secondary characters (a main character amongst several; a love interest; driving someone else's story yet the movie isn't THEIR story).

The female main characters may resemble each other a little (mostly in looks, not in personality) but regardless they're still the most fleshed out characters in the movies.
