[Hayao Miyazaki]

(Anonymous) 2010-07-23 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
*raises hand* I don't really consider him a genius. His films are *gorgeous* don't get me wrong, but that's about where my interest ends. I find the plots lacking and the characters underdeveloped, everything is cool to look at, but I am not really a fan otherwise.

It's a difficult opinion to broadcast though, because animation fans typically love him.

Nah, you're not alone. I liked his older movies but I was never blown away by any of them the way so many people claim to have been. (The Nausicaa manga was pretty good, though - the manga, not the anime.) And his more recent movies have just failed to impress me at all, except for the animation (that tends to be gorgeous). It doesn't help that he keeps rehashing the same old themes and he's as subtle about them as a Königstiger tank.

I have a very similar opinion on Joss Whedon

He comes up with extremely good ideas, but most of the time his plot points leave me in despair.

But on topic anyway, I still love Miyazaki like a boss and I don't think anyone can change my opinion on that.

[identity profile] cheesechimp.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I fucking LOVE Hayao Miyazaki, but the Disney comparison is all wrong. Miyazaki himself hates the comparison. Their themes, their styles, their rolls in their industry, hell everything about their films is significantly different from each other other than that they both made animated children's films. No Miyazaki is not as influential an animator as Disney, but yeah, anime would exist with out Disney. Osamu Tezuka, the creator of the modern anime, was more influenced by the Fleischer brothers than by Disney. By the way, I have NEVER heard of John Lasseter say that Ghibli films are better than Pixar films, and I don't think he feels that way either. Perhaps he thinks they are of a comparable quality, and he certain thinks both are of a very high quality, but I seriously doubt that his "creaming himself" over the work of another means that he hates his own.

I have a huge respect for him due to the place he gives to music in his films. Joe Hisaishi is a real genius, and watching a movie with his music will automatically make it better and more magical.

I love Miyazaki's movies though.

It only took 3 seconds on Wikipedia: ...the earliest known Japanese animation dates from 1917... While I am sure anime would have developed differently without influence from the other side of the Pacific, it seems like a stretch to say it 'wouldn't even exist'. A big stretch.

I love Miyazaki's movies because they're entertaining and high quality, but the thing that matters to me is the fact that they have a decent amount of female characters. Female main characters that aren't always princesses, to boot.

Iunno if I'd ever consider him to be a genius but I'll always and forever love his stuff. Totoro is my childhood, along with Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away. (Also, he looks like an Asian Colonel Sanders, so that's like, plus fifty cool points.)

I don't think he's a genius, but I think he's a great character designer and animator (or was... although people on his staff at Ghibli do most of the work nowadays). Also I wish more people would check out his older stuff, like Future Boy Conan or the episodes he did for the 2nd Lupin III tv series. I also miss the days when all of his stuff had cool planes and shit in it

dude's not perfect, but it's asy to understand why he gets that much attention. His works are consistently well produced and manage to do what most things that try to appeal to both children and adults fail to do, make the movies have universal appeal by not talking down to the audience. And I guess, the fact that well done 2D animation is becoming a rarity these days :(

people have been nitpicking on the incorrect comment about Disney, but I don't think it's wrong to say that without disney, JP animation wouldn't have developed in the way it did.

If John Lasseter thinks Miyazaki's works are superior to Disney and Pixar, he's entitled to his opinion, isn't he?

On an unrelated note, I saw a tweet the other day about how Miyazaki thinks using the iPad is like masturbation. His name and the word "masturbation" in the same sentence... I think I may never be the same again.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-23 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I suppose that if you're allowed to have the opinion that anime owes it's existence to Disney, other people are allowed to compare Miyazaki to Disney.

LOL.

[identity profile] nothingissoundd.livejournal.com 2010-07-23 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Miyazaki's films so much. And imo, he is a genius. It's only one opinion though. I'm fine with your opinion. I don't really care about the comparisons. I just care that he makes amazing movies that are extremely gorgeous and that I like to watch.

[identity profile] siriuslynow.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think what makes him stand out, as a creator not necessarily an artist, is his trust in the audience.

[identity profile] anindeliblemark.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Love Miyazaki, love Disney 2D, love Pixar. There's incredible talent at each studio, why should they (or we) bicker about it?

(Anonymous) 2010-07-24 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing I really agree with here is that Lasseter DOES INDEED need to stop worshiping the ground he walks on. Yes, we all love Miyazaki. Yes, he's talented. Now please stop talking to us like we all don't know who he is and get back to working on the next Pixar movie, kthnx.

[identity profile] doxorz.livejournal.com 2010-07-24 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this secret.

Miyazaki's movies are gorgeously animated, and as an artist, I hold them in very high regard.
As movies (like plot, character, etc) themselves, however, they just don't have the same effect on me like Pixar's and Disney's do.

But ymmv, of course~

I wonder what your criteria for "genius" are, then.

The innovation of Miyazaki's works, imho, is almost entirely in the visuals. If you're looking for unique forms of story telling or unique characters, no, you can see that sort of stuff in Disney and I'd agree that Disney kind of set the standard as to both levels of quality in feature-length animated works and the heavier reliance on fairy-tale type stories.

The visual aspect of Miyazaki's work that particularly appeals to me is in the setting. He creates rich, detailed, non-static settings. This is instrumental in his world building, and he does really well with more "natural" settings: like, things you could imagine seeing in real life. I love how he uses color and sets his palate. If you're looking only at character design, yes, I can see where the influence from Disney lies... but not everyone is looking at that as the primary signifier of style, you know? I wonder if perhaps it might be more that your idea of what constitutes "genius" in animation isn't simply more in line with what Disney was putting out? I see DISTINCT differences and find it kind of amazing that you seem to feel it's so derivative and non-groundbreaking.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-24 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU. Everything you say is full of YES.
