Oh my god, I want a Head Cannon.

[identity profile] secretbutterfly.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Lmao, I knew that word looked wrong I just didn't recognize why until this comment. I want a head cannon too!

Because head canon's as mentioned in the OP's secret make me want to use a head cannon on those types of writers. XD

[identity profile] phoeliac.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
When I started reading I felt a bit sheepish because I do have a "head-canon", but then I realised that I was probably safe because my head-canon a private, happy-fun-time-head-canon that I don't use for fic ;)

Head cannons would be so handy for dealing with everyday problems! Can't open a jar? BOOM OPEN! Can't persuade cat to stop clawing furniture? BOOM CAT AWAY!

[identity profile] secretbutterfly.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I have no problem with head-canons for the most part. Yours is fine! Head-canons that actually make sense in regards to what I see in the source material and all that.

I completely agree re: head cannons! Do WANT!

[identity profile] rhosyn-du.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! Even better, a lazer head cannon.

[identity profile] phoeliac.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
EVERYTHING'S BETTER WITH LAZORRS 8D

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm thiiiiis close to posting my CANNON BUTTSECKS pic but I keep wondering if I should make a headcannon one instead.

A lot of fandom is who you know, not how good you are.

I've seen lots of good stories in a few of my fandoms go unnoticed, or receiving few comments, simply because they're new to it all.

Weird.

[identity profile] secretbutterfly.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, not that weird. It actually sounds a lot like the way Hollywood works. *shrug*

[identity profile] caelith.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
And Hollywood's not weird?

[identity profile] secretbutterfly.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
...that's not what I was implying nor was it what I meant.

I meant that the way things are with the fanfic world are not unique to fanfic. It seemed sadly normal for Hollywood and probably a lot of things in general.

I guess I misread what you meant when you said weird. I took it to mean unique, strange, etc.

[identity profile] sobrecogimiento.livejournal.com 2010-07-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I actually agree with you on this. I've seen some fic summaries on my fpage that make me go, WHAT.

Sometimes, out of curiosity, I click the link just to read the comments. I even skim through the fic. And . . . I just can't understand the praise.

The moral? Know your audience. If the OOC head-canon AU is what people want to read, then that's how it is. The amount of work you put into your stuff does not make it better, or more readable, and clearly not as popular.

Besides, AU (OOC or not, YMMV) is kind of the point. Doing all the things the source material will never touch is the majority of the fun of fanfic.

This isn't what you want to hear, but I think you are right. You are doing something wrong.

This isn't really about this person who you don't read, it's about you being disappointed with yourself. This is about you discovering that the rules for writing that you've been told should work don't match reality. And I'll tell you from experience, it's hard to learn that you got things wrong.

Without seeing your fic, I'd say there's a 90 percent chance the reason why you aren't getting the interest in your fic that you think you should is because what you've written lacks pizzazz. It's not hooking people's emotions. It could be highly realistic, and highly nuanced, but if it's also boring, then it's not going to garner the interest the effort you put in deserves.

Look through what you are writing -- forget for a moment the wording, the ICness, the realism, and ask yourself is this story really something fresh and new, or is it a very well thought through, clever retelling of what everyone already knows.

Ok, so I suck.
I'll stop trying.
Thanks.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-07-28 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
If that's the message you got out of what I just wrote, then you really aren't ready to improve. If you want to be more popular like the people you envy, then come back, read again, and see the direction I just pointed you in. Hooking people's emotions is a skill that can be worked on, but not if it's a factor that is being totally ignored.

Frankly, I found my dispair level highest when I thought I was doing everything I could and still fell flat. Finding a new direction to work on (once I got over the "ouch" factor) filled me with excitement, renewed determination, and hope.

Wow. You should be glad your story isn't getting much attention if you're this sensitive to criticism.
