It has to do with the mods/admins who are like this wanting to be a special snowflake and have something that they're queen/king of. Instead of, you know, wanting to share the love of a fandom and encourage others to write/create/squee. And really? THAT's what makes you feel important? Being known as the "admin" of a fucking internet fandom community?

Sorry for the rant. This secret just pushes all my "OMFG THIS!" buttons.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-07 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
does the mod know you're eyeing up her comm?

(Anonymous) 2010-08-07 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*reins.

REINS, God dammit.

sorry I had to get that out of my system

Or what about when you've stopped watching the damn show and STILL insist on promoting your (outdated, squicky) fanon interpretations of the characters through your mod powers?

/is bitter

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, ITA. It's one thing to abandon fics or whatever—I won't read your fic if you are a serial abandoner, but I won't think you're a bad or irresponsible person. But if you take on a comm, you need to be realistic about how much time you have and get help. People do this all the time. It is just not that hard.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly what happened with metal_mp3 (I am not linking the community because it is a shithole and don't deserve a link.) The admin, Cat, took me on as moderator. So I did. I made a lot of enemies because I actually enforced the fucking rules, and most metalheads are a bunch of stupid teenagers who think authority = Nazi. It was pretty much just me running the community because Cat had disappeared, then one morning I wake up to find that I've been removed as moderator and there was the LJ equivalent of partying in the street, burning [livejournal.com profile] dethtoll in effigy, etc. (mostly from people who got mad at me for enforcing rules they didn't like, and people who didn't like me because I didn't like their specific subgenre of metal.) No warning, no discussion beforehand, just "oh you're fired and all the idiots think it's great, I'm so popular now." I asked her to at least tell me why I was fired and she said "because you were taking over my community."

NO I WASN'T YOU STUPID BITCH I WAS DOING YOUR FUCKING JOB

(Anonymous) 2010-08-07 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
JFC I could have written this. And the original secret, too. The real funny of it is that the community in my scenario then died completely because the admin went back to her lame ass excuses and martyrdom instead of, you know, running a fucking comm. Bravo, dumbass. Brah-vo.

Oh man, that's completely unfair. That's some underhanded crap right there.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-07 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with this. Though, as a mod who just got out of the hospital, I hope no one in my comm feels this way. :P

[identity profile] inglorious-dmk.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Unpopular opinion is unpopular, but

I mean, I run comms, and I love them all to bits. I created them, crafted them into a space I could be proud of, watched over them single-handedly, and even if my interest were to wane or my life to get crazy, I know it would be incredibly difficult for me to entrust them to someone I barely even know. I'm not sure I could manage it.

I completely agree.

I don't understand whiny entitled comm members who act like they're the center of the universe. Maintaining a LJ comm isn't a job. It's not serious business. They're not getting paid for it, so, sucks to be you. IRL comes first, even if you don't care. Start your own comm if you don't like it.

For real. If you notice a trend of things making you not be able to run the community, give it to someone else. Most of the time, people are not in the community because of you. They're in it because they're into the subject matter. So having a mod that can run things >>> having a mod that just won't let go.

This goes doubly so for RP communities or other communities (contest, challenge) that really need mod involvement.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I do find it puzzling how people can have such a death grip on communities when they're clearly not keeping up on them. I modded an RP community before, had a lot of personal stuff happen to me along the way and had a mental breakdown. I eventually had to leave the community to the co-mod, as well as the RP.

And you know what? When I was thinking about doing it but hadn't done it yet, I felt like utter shit for not doing my part. Modding a busy community is not for the faint of heart. I still feel bad about not ducking out of the RP earlier.

Seriously people, when you run a community it isn't all about you. Share the burden if you need help.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-08 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
God, so much this.

[identity profile] fencer-x.livejournal.com 2010-08-08 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
For fucking serious. I've got no problem with who mods what for the most part, but when it's a comm I'm heavily invested in, then I start to take an interest in proper tagging, logical enforcement of rules, having a layout that is not shitty, promoting an environment that's welcoming to new fans while still maintaining interest of old fans.

If you can't do that, even after months and months of my going back and forth with you to fix the state of your large fandom icon of a comm AND won't take on some co-mods or just step down altogether? Pretty good sign of crappy modding, and please don't act so surprised when people move to another comm.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-08 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Preaching to the choir a bit here, since anyone who follows fandomsecrets is no doubt aware of good mod-ing practice.

Psst. We love you technophile.

[identity profile] jade-lightning.livejournal.com 2010-08-08 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
God, this. Actually I hate terrible mods in general, not just ones that don't know when to get help. Especially when the comm's made up of a super tight group of friends that will just back the mods no matter what and have no respect for their members.

I swear, I'm not still pissed or anything. Really.

This, this, this, this.

Most particularly, as just recently happened to a comm i was a member of...the mod - who had disavowed any control over the com literally years ago - had a sudden 'moral epiphany' and deleted the entire comm, no warning, nothing.

I got her to open it back up for a few days, with a warning post, so authors could get their fic/comments and people could archive things. But the comm is gone, and it just pisses me off. You can decide to not be cool with something anymore, but you do *not* have the right to just toss out other people's fic and ideas just 'cause. There were even volunteers to take over the comm!
Grrrrrrr.

I have no opinion over this secret, but this is the best Napoléon painting ever.

[identity profile] vardoeger.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Going against the grain here, but the mods made them, they can do whatever they want with them which includes letting them fall into ruin. It sucks and long and repeated excuses are tiresome and pathetic, but if you don't like it make your own and show them how it's fucking done.
