That's probably because the show did a pretty goddamn convincing job showing that Mulder and Scully are soulmates (not, like, capital-S Twilight-esque SOUUUUUULMAAAATES, but really really good matches for each other), and thinking of either one of them with anyone else is like thinking of your happily married parents stepping out on each other. The mind rebels.

But that's okay -- Scully/Doggett are still hot. Scully/Skinner, too.

Yeah, you don't HAVE to get anybody to help you. But in refusing to do so (and foregoing chasing around after people making sure they're doing what they're supposed to be doing), you're accepting that you have to do everything yourself, that's the trade-off you make. Suck it up.

If you're having trouble keeping going now, it's honestly probably a good thing you aren't playing Sburb/Sgrub. It's a "game" full of things that can see the future and are always right telling you to just give up, you will fail, you and everyone you know are going to die, you can't save anything, you can't change anything, so you might as well just accept it and do as you're told without a fuss.
