i, too, am a professionally trained musician...what are these technical reasons why they're great? i can't really think of any. which isn't necessarily a bad thing---tons of bands can be great, just not, like...technically amazing. the only well-known one i can think of that's both is radiohead. i'm a jazz musician, though, so maybe i've got a different perspective on things. they seem like a nice pop group, but they're not really doing anything innovative, in my opinion.

BUT that's all my opinion, so...it means nothing

I think it is slightly genre-based, but if you listen to each instrumentalist in this band, their performances are just so damned tight. Then, put them together, and they're damned near flawless. I literally can't decide which part I love the most when listening to them. Not to mention the production values - the whole package just blows me out of the water. And to be so tight and really musical *within* that genre - one I usually don't give a second glance to, just really excites me.

If you really want specifics, I would literally have to sit down with you, a pair of fine speakers, and their albums and point out everything on a case-by-case basis. It would take hours. Seriously - not to be snarky, but I'm sure you must know this - "what are these technical reasons they're so great" isn't a very good question (think about it - if I asked you to do the same with Radiohead, it'd take a novel, amiright?)

true true! i'm not really familiar with the genre, admittedly, so i'm sure you have more of a perspective on it than me. wasn't trying to snark, was just honestly interested as i haven't really had any serious discussions about this type of group with anyone before.

(OP again)

I didn't think you were snarking. THat's just it, though - this just ISN'T the kind of genre where I'd expect to find something that blew me away, you know? Hence the secret, I guess - it's not something I usually listen to, and most of my fellow musicians don't even know who the hell they are and would raise their eyebrow at me if they did. And I can't help but think the "kids" who are fans would probably be like, "wtf, old lady!" So I'm stuck in-between, LOL.

meh. "professionally trained" and "jazz musician" and "innovative"... sometimes theres more talent and skill in knowing what to do with simplicity than in flashing your dick around with training and high art. you know, that whole knowing what not to play thing. sorry, just my opinion, but i'm never impressed with people who can't fathom the value in something unless it's complex and "advanced."

i'm sorry, i don't really follow. i mentioned i was a jazz musician because they listen for different kinds of things, in my experience. i think you misunderstood me. as i said in my previous comment, there are plenty of bands that are great without being technically great, and that a lot of the bands that i listen to are like that. liking things that are innovative has nothing to do with being pretentious and technically trained in music. the same goes for creating music; in the band i mentioned, for example (radiohead), none of the members are classically trained, and i think they're great, even to the point of being technically great. even so, knowing what not to play is something that you learn whether you major in music or you don't. it just so happens that it's something that you learn how to do correctly when you play a lot, and i've noticed that professional musicians tend to do that.
