It does make there gushing less meaningful.

I think of it this way: a teacher who marks really difficultly vs. one that marks really laxly. Which does it feel better to get a really good mark from?
In addition, imagine not realizing the teacher marks really laxly and getting really excited at first. And then realizing, yeah the positivity had little to do with your work and is more just the way the person is.

Or like getting insulted by House or Snape. They snark at everyone so it just means less.

But … you can only tell that about people who have to talk about everything that they see, like a professional critic. I see many things that I don't like, but I don't make LJ posts about them. I choose to talk about the things I do like, for the most part. To someone looking over my LJ it might seem like I like everything, but I just don't enjoy spending time talking about shit I don't like. Similarly, I know people who use their LJs primarily to vent. Their lives are not bad, but they only ever talk about the parts of their life that they aren't satisfied with.

And I don't think the teacher marking is a good metaphor in any way. Again, teachers have to read all the papers in the class. An A paper is an A paper, and if I end up with a lot of A's in my class it's not because I'm not grading harshly but because I haven't made the assignment challenging enough. But as anyone who's taught will tell you, a class is too small to be a perfect bell all the time.

I feel that this just pushes that idea that praise is only worth it from people who never praise, which adds luster to that whole withholding parent thing, and that's a fucked up mess. If something is worthy of praise, it's worthy of praise.

Good point, bad examples.

It could be that the person only likes saying anything about the stuff they love.

If something is worthy of praise it is worthy of praise--definitely.
But if something that is notably less worthy of praise is getting the same extensive praise...
It just all turns into meaningless gushing.
