I want mummies to take over the supernatural eyecandy in mainstream media. It would be lovely to see rabid teenie fancrazies obsess over HAWT~* King Tut's rotten decayed corpse is.

THIS. I love vampires, I will eat up vampire fiction with a spoon, I readily admit it. But lately it's just TOO MUCH VAMPIRE.

[identity profile] mentalguru.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that the vampire thing seems to have gone overboard what with the book series which must not be named and its rather shocking popularity even though I'm not into vampires.

(Granted I had a bad start with them, I really shouldn't have had book of said unnameable series as my first all out vampire novel, I've found some decent ones though such as 'The Historian' and 'Salem's Lot' but they weren't stellar or awesome either i my opinion).

But I don't know a part of me wants to give it a try but there are too many choices, and I certainly don't want to have to wade in through all the drek which is probably out there just trying to milk the cash cow.

Though I'm guessing some of them have beenGENUINELY inspired whether as a good example or a bad example of how to write vampires in their opinion.

I think it's a shame there isn't some net resource to help get through the drek.

But there does seem to be far too much of it. But then again, if you don't want to read it you don't have to. There's a market right now and people vote with their wallets. Plus perhaps already existing vampire novels even got a sudden boost because of the whole thing- hence even more books on the market for that sort of thing in the book stores because they are high on the seller list or they see them as POTENTIALLY being an easy sell.

It's just the 'in' thing right now, but it will die. And then some day probably be reborn again. And then die again. Probably.

I agree so much.

Don't forget there's a web musical about them too. :D I have an interest in that kind of thing too (not so much vampires specifically, but more the occult in general), so I can see where you're coming from.

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not the only one, but since neither of us are making money off the downfall and wussification of a previously-cool monster, we can't do jack about it.

[identity profile] andromeda-2.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I sort of agree, though I still like vampires(I just wish there'd be more badass vamps out there than lovey-dovey vamps). Personally though, I feel like zombies are becoming more and more overexposed in the media(at least in games, as a downloadable content) =/

[identity profile] errorsign.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You are totally not alone. Vampires have been overdone recently. Just like how pirates were in 2004 and generic boy-bands were in 1999.

It's just the thing of the times. In five years something will replace it.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
We need more werewolves!! Non-twilight werewolves. But they'd probably pussify them too, so it's probably for the best.

I don't know whether to laugh or facepalm at most of the girls I graduated with. Ten years ago, they bullied me like mad because I was this quiet little oddball who was immersed in vampire fiction. Fast foward to now, when vampire fiction has gone straight down the toilet in terms of quality, and all those same chicks are spanking themselves into an orgasmic frenzy over it all. Just... wow. Don't get me wrong, I still love vampires. I just agree with Anon; I can't wait for the trend to die down!

/is wondering when El Chupacabra will be coming into vogue...

Sigh...I have to agree. But I think the real problem is that most of the stuff is simply bad. A glut of terribleness that is only out there because they have attached a vampire to it. I have started reading half a dozen vampire books this year only to give up by page 50 because they were all so terrible. Same thing with vampire movies and shows. We need quality. Not quantity.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-09 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you, OP.

Calling it now: (Fallen) angels are going to become the new vampires. You may all cry now.

I was where you are about 4 years ago, and I thought it couldn't get any more overused.

And then of course, it did. As you might imagine It drives me crazy. So no, you're definitely not alone here.

[identity profile] wizmuffin.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello there, fellow portuguese anon. I agree so much, let some other supernatural creature take the spotlight, preferably one that hasn't been so over done for decades.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-09 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally read this as "you know how when you give cat too much candy, it gets sick?" and I was like ...but when you give anything too much candy it gets sick, wtf. Uh. IDK, sorry.

I really wish I'd saved that picture Wil Wheaton tweeted in which someone taped a sign onto a shelf at Borders or something that read "VAMPIRE BOOKS (section formerly known as young adult)"

As someone who doesn't particuallarly like them it's gone past the getting old stage and is fully into the kicking the dead horse stage.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-10 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Some of that has got to be part of geekdom becoming slightly more mainstream. Like with comics, adults aren't looked down on for liking comics the way they were a decade or two ago. Anime isn't hard to find in the US, hasn't been for a decade or so. Everybody. Friggin'. Loves. Zombies. EVERYONE.

And now you don't have to be that weird loner girl to like vampires. The boyband level of interest in SUPERMODEL!vampires will probably die down, but I don't think they'll ever settle back into being an oddball interest.

Soooo, sucks if you liked them and got overloaded :( I've been lucky in avoiding the really bad stuff.

hear that.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I love vampires. My problem with the latest craze isn't that there are vampires, it's that so much of it is teenager romance soap-operas. I can't stand teenage romance, and I find the petty high school angsts to be duller than dishwater.

Remember when the vampires were cops and solved crimes and helped prevent the end of the world? Now that was cool.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still waiting for the day someone peeks out the window and realizes that vampires and werewolves aren't even the tip of the iceberg of mythological critters...

[identity profile] laifan.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hahah Lua Vermelha. Costumava ver com a minha avó quando dava aos fins-de-semana. Como é de esperar a história ficou ainda mais cliché e manhosa...

(Anonymous) 2010-08-10 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Preach. I love vampire stuff as much as the next person, but all this overload (badly done, overload even) is making me sick. I'm hoping that some day someone will realize all the myths they're missing, but I'm not holding my breath.
